Lady Tigers Keep Playoff Hopes Alive with Sweep v.
Darton
With one double-header remaining in the season, the SGC Lady
Tigers had to win both games to keep their playoff hopes alive. After losing
three out of four games to Andrew College and Gordon College last week, the
Lady Tigers had their backs to the wall when they traveled to Albany to face
the Darton Cavaliers on Wednesday afternoon.
They answered the challenge.
The Lady Tigers swept the Cavaliers 4-3 and 7-5 to remain mathematically in
the playoff hunt. “We did everything we needed to do Wednesday. The losses
to Andrew and Darton hurt us. But we did everything we could with the games
we had left,” said head coach Rob Brunel.
In game one, the Lady Tigers trailed 3-2 going into the top of the seventh.
With two outs and runners on second and third, Chantel Schroeder doubled on
a 3-2 count to score both runs. The big hit put the Lady Tigers up 4-3.
Pitcher Desirae Thomas went to work in the bottom of the seventh and held
the Cavaliers to secure the win. Jensen Barrett was 2-4 with an RBI and
Brittany Johnson was 2-3 with an RBI double of her own. Thomas struck out 10
Cavaliers in the complete-game win.
In game two, the Lady Tigers once again came from behind to take a win from
Darton. SGC trailed 3-1 in the top of the fourth inning when Brittany Yates
led off with a hit. Morgan Vereline bunted Yates to second. Brittany Johnson
reached on an error by the shortstop. Tara Miles followed with a walk to
load the bases. Barrett came up next and hit a sacrifice fly to score Yates.
With two on and two out, former CCA Patriot Kasey Morris unloaded on a 1-0
pitch for a three-run home run to left center to put the Lady Tigers up 5-3.
SGC added two runs in the top of the seventh to take a 7-3 lead. In the
bottom of the seventh, the Cavaliers rallied, scoring two runs on a Lady
Tigers’ miscue before SGC recorded an out. Starter Holli Moore had thrown
well; however, Coach Brunel pulled her in the seventh before she got an out.
He sent Desirae Thomas in, who entered the game with a runner on third and
no out. She picked up where she left off in game one and sat down Darton
without allowing another run across the plate.
The Lady Tigers ended their season with a 20-22 overall record an 8-10
conference mark. To make the playoffs, Darton needs to sweep Georgia
Military and ABAC needs to take at least one game from Georgia Military. “We
won’t know how things will shake out until the first part of next week.
Right now, it’s a waiting game,” said Coach Brunel.
