SGC to Host Earth Week Activities Beginning April 19
This year’s Earth Week celebration at South Georgia College
will feature an interesting series of environmentally conscious
presentations that highlight important conservation and ecological issues.
Each year, SGC promotes environmental awareness through Earth Week
activities, scheduled around the annual Earth Day celebration, which takes
place on April 22.
The college kicks off Earth Week on Monday, April 19 with a presentation on
the Broxton Rocks by SGC’s own Frankie Snow. The talk begins at 6:30 p.m. in
Stubbs Hall, room 142. On Tuesday, April 20, SGC’s Environmental Awareness
Club will plant a tree outside Davis Hall at noon in honor of Dr. Jim
Cottingham, Vice President for Student Affairs. At 6:30 p.m. in Stubbs Hall,
room 142, Dr. Adam Safer and Robert Preston will host a snake show featuring
a variety of snakes from around the globe. On Wednesday, state herpetologist
Dirk Stevenson will present an informative talk on the endangered eastern
indigo snake in Stubbs Hall, room 142, at 6:30 p.m. The week will conclude
on Earth Day – Thursday, April 22 – with a film titled The End of the Line,
which offers a shocking inside look at the global fishing industry. SGC
students will also be able to make an environmental pledge from 11 a.m. to 2
p.m. in the Engram Union. Prizes will be furnished by Wal-Mart Distribution
Center.
These events are sponsored by the Environmental Awareness Club and the SGC
Cultural Events Committee. These presentations are free and open to the
public.
