Cottingham to Address SGC Graduates

Dr. Jim Cottingham, Vice President for Student Affairs, will deliver the commencement address at SGC’s 81st graduation ceremony. The annual event will be held on campus on Thursday, May 6, 2010. “I am really looking forward to this,” Dr. Cottingham stated. “Graduation is a great time to celebrate the successes of the college, thank friends and supporters, and spotlight the wonderful achievement of our graduates and their families.”

Dr. Jim CottinghamDr. Cottingham will retire this summer following 32 years of service at SGC. As professor of education and psychology, he taught and served as an academic advisor prior to assuming his present administrative role in 1995. Having graduated from South Georgia College in 1974, he completed additional degrees at Appalachian State University, Columbia University, and the University of Georgia.

“Jim Cottingham has been an incredible asset to South Georgia College over the last three decades. This is a bittersweet moment for our institution. We will miss Dr. Cottingham but we are excited for both him and his family as he begins this exciting new chapter in his life. Dr. Cottingham has been instrumental in the growth and success of this college. It is only fitting that he delivers the commencement address at the 2010 graduation ceremony,” said Dr. Virginia Carson, SGC President.

The public is invited to the graduation ceremonies which are slated to begin at 9 a.m. in front of historic Peterson Hall. This year’s graduating class will be one of the largest in history, having witnessed the college’s enrollment reach 2000 for the first time.
