Lady Tigers Drop Double-Header to Middle Georgia
“Middle Georgia is the best-hitting team in the conference.
If your pitchers are just a little off or if you make mistakes, they will
capitalize,” said SGC Lady Tigers head coach Rob Brunel after playing the
Lady Warriors Wednesday afternoon in Douglas. SGC hit the ball well in game
one and had opportunities to score but couldn’t push runners across the
plate. MGC took the first game 7-1. In game two, the Lady Tigers fell behind
early then pressed too hard in an effort to get back in the game. MGC relied
on their strengths and never let SGC mount a comeback. The Lady Warriors won
game two 13-3.
Desirae Thomas started game one and lasted seven innings. Of the seven runs
she allowed, just four were earned. Thomas did a good job all day; many of
Middle Georgia’s runs came on flares that dropped in front of the outfield.
The Lady Tigers had a pretty good day at the plate and had several
opportunities to score. “We just didn’t get those timely hits. We had nine
hits but we stranded runners all day,” said Coach Brunel. Tara Miles (3-4)
and Cecily DeMarco (2-3) were the Lady Tigers’ top hitters.
In game two, Middle Georgia jumped out to a 6-0 lead and rolled from there.
“We just didn’t hit,” said Coach Brunel. Jessica Cooper started for SGC and
lasted one inning. Cooper normally works the inside part of the plate well.
Wednesday, she wasn’t getting the inside calls and had to move the ball out
over the plate. The Lady Warriors pounced and plated six in the first.
Offensively, Miles and Jensen Barrett were both 1-3. “I was more
disappointed in the second game. We tried to get all of our runs back at one
time and got sloppy,” said Coach Brunel.
The losses drop SGC to 16-16 overall and 4-6 in the conference. Friday, the
Lady Tigers traveled to Georgia Perimeter for two more conference games.
Next week, they have four more, all of which are at home – Andrew College
(April 14 at 3 p.m.) and Georgia College (April 17 at 2 p.m.). “We’ll know a
lot more about where we are after those games,” said Coach Brunel.
