ABAC Sweeps SGC in Weekend Double-Header

Logan Gaines, Andrew Anderson, Josh Palmer and Zach Bennett each homered in the South Georgia College Tigers’ weekend double-header against the ABAC Stallions in Tifton. The Stallions countered with four home runs of their own, including three by right fielder Ikaika Anderson, to sweep the two games by scores of 11-9 and 8-4.

SGC only led once in game one – by a 2-1 margin after the first inning. ABAC scored five runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the seventh. Trailing 11-5, the Tigers made a little noise, scoring four runs in the top of the eighth to get within two runs of the Stallions. With one out and Phillip Culpepper on third in the eighth, ABAC reliever Ryne Powers struck out two Tigers to end the rally. Neither team scored the remainder of the game.

Justin Fordham (3-3, 5.83) took the loss. Andrew Anderson led the way offensively with a 3-5 day at the plate, including three RBI and three runs scored. His home run, a two-run shot in the sixth, was his team-leading seventh of the year. He held the lead for one batter. Then Logan Gaines stepped in and launched a solo shot for his seventh home run of the season. Gaines’ homer capped a 2-4, two-run, two RBI day. The Tigers committed six errors in the contest.

Things didn’t go much better for SGC in game two. ABAC jumped out to an 8-0 lead before SGC decided to start hitting. The Tigers scored one in the fifth and three in the seventh, including a two-run homer by Bennett (4). SGC managed just four hits, two of which came off the bat of Bennett. Starter Frank Ambrosino (5-3, 4.97) was credited with the loss.

The Tigers are now 27-16 on the season and 7-5 in conference play. SGC is tied for third in the conference with two other teams – Young Harris and Georgia Perimeter. Sitting atop the rankings are Middle Georgia and Gordon, both of whom are 9-3. Tuesday, the Tigers played East Georgia in a non-conference match-up. Results were unavailable at press time.

This weekend, SGC begins the final push to the post-season with a three-game set against Young Harris in Douglas. Friday, the Tigers and Mountain Lions play one game, beginning at 6 p.m. On Saturday, the two teams face each other in a double-header. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. SGC then hits the road for conference games against Gordon and Georgia Perimeter before finishing the season at home against Darton (April 21 at 5 p.m.) and Middle Georgia (April 22 at 6 p.m. and April 24 at 2 p.m.).
