Bennett Homers Twice in 11-7 Win Over ABAC
Sophomore designated hitter Zach Bennett homered twice and
drove in three runs in the South Georgia College Tigers’ 11-7 win over the
conference foe ABAC Stallions Thursday in Tifton. While Bennett’s 4-5 day
led the Tigers offensively, Stuart Drew (2-5, two RBI, one run), Andrew
Anderson (3-5, one RBI) and Josh Palmer (two RBI) also helped SGC’s cause.
Starter Greg Fietsam (2-2, 5.20) evened his record with the win.
The
Tigers opened things up in the top of the second when Bennett hit a one-out
single to left. Chris Thompson reached on an infield single and Bennett
moved to third on a wild throw by ABAC short stop Andrew Arp. Cole Anderson
added a single of his own, which drove in Bennett. Another single, this one
by Stuart Drew, scored Thompson and moved Cole Anderson to third after
another wild throw. Drew also advanced a base on the errant toss. David
Reid-Foley smacked the only extra-base hit of the inning, a long double to
right center that scored Cole Anderson and put Drew on third. A single by
Andrew Anderson and a fielder’s choice off Josh Palmer’s bat scored Drew and
Reid-Foley before a strikeout ended the inning.
SGC added runs in the third and sixth inning to take a 7-2 lead. In the top
of the seventh, the Tigers plated three more, including Bennett’s first home
run of the game to increase their advantage to 10-2. ABAC’s bats woke up
late in the game; from the seventh to the ninth innings, the Stallions
scored five runs to narrow the lead. SGC added a run in the top of the ninth
on Bennett’s second home run. Bennett and Wesley Morris are tied for second
in home runs with three each, behind Logan Gaines and Anderson, who have six
apiece.
The Tigers are now 27-14 on the season and 7-3 in conference play. They
return to ABAC today for a double-header, beginning at 2 p.m. Following
today’s games, SGC is off until April 6, when they face East Georgia College
in a double-header at Crider Field at 3 p.m.
