Heroics by Day, Morris Cap Rallies to Sweep ABAC
No lead is safe. Lindsey Day, Kasey Morris and the rest of
the South Georgia College Lady Tigers proved that point twice Monday with
come-from-behind, late-inning heroics to sweep the ABAC Lady Stallions in
Douglas. In game one, the Lady Tigers made up a five-run deficit in the
final two innings, capped by Day’s walk-off grand slam, to escape with the
win. Game two followed a similar template; SGC trailed 5-2 before tying the
score in the bottom of the seventh. The Lady Tigers trailed by two in the
bottom of the eighth but snatched the victory with a two-out line drive by
Morris that scored the game-winning run. “It was important for us to come
off Spring Break with two big wins. ABAC is a strong team and they’re always
in the mix of things,” said head coach Rob Brunel.
In game one, SGC was down 6-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. The
Lady Tigers scored two in the sixth to cut the lead in half. Then, in the
bottom of the seventh, Brittany Yates led off with a ground out. Desirae
Thomas and Brittany Johnson walked to put runners at first and second with
one out. Tara Miles singled to left, scoring Thomas. Jensen Barrett followed
with an infield hit that plated Johnson. Kasey Morris was next; she hit into
a fielder’s choice then moved to second on a stolen base. With runners on
second and third with two outs, Cecily DeMarco walked to load the bases.
That brought up the hard-hitting Day, who already had one home run on the
year. She swung at the first pitch and missed. The next pitch was low and
inside, evening the count. Day fouled off the third pitch of the at-bat to
dig herself into a 1-2 hole. Unfazed, she launched the next pitch high and
deep to left center to win the game 9-6. Becca Hewitt, who threw three
innings in relief of starter Tiffany Davies, picked up the win.
In the second game, the Lady Tigers once again waited until the final frame
before waking up their bats. SGC was down 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh
when Miles led off with a double. She moved to third on a passed ball.
Barrett walked then stole second. A Kasey Morris single scored Miles and
moved Ba
rrett to third. Cecily DeMarco hit into a fielder’s choice that
scored Barrett. Lindsey Day followed, no doubt with another walk-off in her
crosshairs. This time, though, ABAC won the battle and retired Day with a
pop-up. Chantel Schroeder was next and raked a two-out double to plate
DeMarco and tie the score at five and force extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, ABAC scored two runs on a passed ball, an error
and a hit to take a 7-5 lead. The Lady Tigers, however, weren’t done. In the
bottom of the eighth, Morgan Vereline led off with a fielder’s choice that
moved Kayla Register, who started the inning on second base, to third.
Kaitlynn Darsey hit a sacrifice fly scored Register. With the bases empty
and one out, Miles continued her hot streak with a triple. Barrett followed
with a single, scoring Miles and tying the game at seven apiece. Morris
stepped up to the plate with two outs and Barrett on first. She laced a line
drive to left that knuckled badly. The ball fell in front of the left
fielder and rolled away, giving the speedy Barrett enough time to score the
game-winning run from first.
SGC stands at 15-13 overall and 3-3 in conference play. Right now, the Lady
Tigers are in second in the conference. However, most of the teams – SGC
included – will play the majority of their conference schedules during
April. “We’re in good position but there are still a lot of things to sort
out. Our conference play really begins this week,” said Coach Brunel. SGC
travels to Brunswick for a conference double-header today against Coastal
Georgia. The next home game is April 7 when Middle Georgia comes to town.
The games begin at 3 p.m.
