SGC Men’s Soccer Defeats SCAD, Women Finish Spring Campaign

The SGC men’s soccer team defeated Savannah College of Art of Design Saturday, an NCAA Division II team, by a score of 2-1. The game was a fast one with some brilliant soccer played by both sides. Felipe Nascimento scored off a pass from Gerald Jonah with 22 seconds on the clock to seal the game. Felipe set up the other goal, which Steven Kaelin scored. The win pushes the Tigers’ record to 3-2 for the spring season. “I was very pleased with the effort the entire game,” noted head coach Ken Kirsch. “There was some very good soccer played today and I told the team it was a joy to watch from the sideline.” The men are off next weekend but travel to Thomas University on Saturday, April 10 to close out the spring season.

On Sunday, the SGC Lady Tigers women’s soccer team finished their spring season with a 2-2 tie against the South Georgia United. The game ended 20 minutes early due to inclement weather. The women finish the spring campaign 0-2-3. “I was very pleased with our style of play today,” noted Coach Kirsch. “We are starting to play the style we want and my girls are beginning to understand the importance of working hard every day.”

The Lady Tigers were led by the Jamaican duo of Marcillee McBean and Jody Bethune. Each had a goal and an assist in the game. “Both will be back next year and I expect both of them to lead our team and be dominant forces in our conference,” Coach Kirsch added. The Lady Tigers have already signed eight players for the 2010 class and should be a much more dynamic and deeper team for next fall.
