Darton Takes Two of Three from SGC
The Darton Cavaliers ended the South Georgia College Tigers’
seven-game winning streak Friday, defeating SGC 9-6 in Albany. Saturday, the
Tigers returned to Albany and split a double-header with the Cavaliers,
losing game one 7-4 and winning the third game of the series 8-1 behind a
complete game from Frank Ambrosino.
The Tigers and the Cavaliers battled back and forth in the first game of the
series before Darton took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth
inning. Starter Tony Albritton (4-3, 5.62) lasted 5 1/3 innings,
surrendering six runs and striking out three before turning the ball over to
reliever Greg Fietsam. Fietsam finished things off for the Tigers, allowing
three runs in the process. Logan Gaines and Andrew Anderson combined for
four RBI, while Andrew Anderson, Cole Anderson and David Reid-Foley each had
two hits.
The Tigers went back to Albany on Saturday hoping to bounce back from a
forgettable game one. Unfortunately, things didn’t go much better. The
Cavaliers touched SGC starter Justin Fordham for six runs in the bottom of
the first inning. Though Darton would add one more in the bottom of the
sixth, the first-inning onslaught would be all the Cavaliers would need to
defeat the Tigers for the second game in a row. SGC plated four runs in the
game, never scoring more than one run in an inning. Josh Palmer led SGC
offensively, going 3-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Fordham (3-2, 5.27)
took the loss.
In the final game of the series, the Tigers combined timely hitting with a
solid performance by Ambrosino to win 8-1 and avoid a sweep at the hands of
the Cavaliers. SGC played with fire most of the game; the Tigers refused to
score until the top of the sixth inning when Josh Palmer broke a 0-0 tie
with a single that scored Andrew Anderson. Darton tied things up in the
bottom of the frame when Freddy Garay hit a two-out triple to score Tagg
Lanier. Unfazed, Ambrosino retired the next batter, Erick Gaylord, to end
the inning.
In the top of the seventh, Chris Thompson started a seven-run rally when he
reach base after being hit by a pitch. The Tigers opened up the flood gates
with seven runs on seven hits (and two Darton errors) to put the game away.
Ambrosino, energized by his team’s sudden offensive explosion, sat down the
first three Cavaliers he saw to end the game. David Reid-Foley, Andrew
Anderson and Josh Palmer each had two hits. Palmer and Seth Foster had a
pair of RBI each. The win gave Ambrosino, who sports a 3.95 ERA, his
team-leading fifth win of the season.
The 1-2 series dropped the Tigers to 6-3 in the conference and into a tie
for third place with Young Harris and Georgia Perimeter. Middle Georgia and
Gordon, both 7-2 in conference play, sit atop the standings. SGC is 26-14
overall.
This week, the Tigers travel to Tifton to face ABAC on Thursday and Saturday
in a three-game conference series. They return home to play a double-header
against East Georgia College on Tuesday, April 6 at 3 p.m.
