Tigers Sweep Double-header, Improve to 25-12

The South Georgia College Tigers refuse to slow down. Thursday afternoon, they made the short trip to Mount Vernon to face the Brewton-Parker junior varsity squad and returned home with a pair of wins, including an 18-13, extra innings slobberknocker in game two.

Jake Gower stepped things up in the first game, an uneventful 8-1 win, with a three-hit, four-RBI performance that included a two-run home run in the fifth inning, his first of the year. Chris Thompson, Josh Palmer and David Reid-Foley also had multiple hits for SGC. A trio of pitchers — Bray Bishop, Dylan Wall and Bryan Petree — combined for a three-hit, one-run outing. Bishop (2-0, 7.20), who went four innings and allowed the only Brewton-Parker run, earned the win.

Game two didn’t go quite as easily as did the first contest. Brewton-Parker decided enough was enough and touched the first to SGC pitchers, starter Caleb Lairsey and Phillip Summers, for 13 runs in the first four innings. While Brewton Parker was scoring in droves, the Tigers weren’t exactly sitting back and watching helplessly. They were scoring as well, just not at the same clip as their opponents. SGC plated 10 runs in that same time frame and headed into the fifth inning trailing by just three runs, 13-10. Head coach Scott Sims sent reliever Tyler Ross in with one out in the fourth inning, who stopped Brewton-Parker’s rally. In the fifth, Zach Bennett entered the game and threw four scoreless innings, which allowed the Tigers to get back in the game.

SGC tied the score in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Logan Gaines and a double by Jake Gower, who was pinch hitting for Jeremy Donaldson, which forced the game into extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Cole Anderson led off with a single, followed by a base-hit bunt by Chris Thompson. Stuart Drew singled to load the bases. Andrew Anderson hit a single, which scored Cole Anderson and Thompson. Drew scored on a sacrifice fly to center by David Reid-Foley. With Andrew Anderson on third, Gaines hit a big two-run home run, his second of the game and sixth of the year, to put the Tigers ahead 18-13. In the bottom of the frame, Bennett gave up a lead-off walk but then retired the next three two batters, two on strikeouts, to end the game.

Gaines launched a pair of two-run homers to cap his 3-5, five-RBI performance. He and Andrew Anderson are now tied for the team lead in home runs with six each. Gaines, Andrew Anderson, Stuart Drew and Seth Foster all scored three runs each. Bennett (1-1, 1.69) took the win.

The Tigers’ next six games, all of which are conference games, are on the road. This weekend, SGC faces Darton in a three-game series in Albany. Next week, the Tigers travel to Tifton twice to play ABAC before returning home for a non-conference double-header against East Georgia College on April 6 at 3 p.m. SGC is now 25-12 on the season.
