Tigers Improve to 5-1 in Conference Play With Weekend
Sweep
The South Georgia College Tigers outscored conference foe
Andrew College 28-8 in a three-game sweep over the weekend, bringing the
Tigers’ overall record to 23-12.
SGC benefitted from strong pitching performances by Justin Fordham and Frank
Ambrosino, and great offensive production from Stuart Drew, Andrew Anderson,
Logan Gaines and Josh Palmer during the series. None of the games were
close; SGC won 12-6, 7-2 and 9-0, respectively. The Tigers made the most of
every opportunity they were given and then created a few more of their own
to cruise to the sweep.
In game one Friday afternoon, SGC scored one each in the second, fourth and
ninth innings, and also plated four in the sixth and five in the eighth.
Stuart Drew raked four hits in six plate appearances. He also drove in two
runs. Designated hitter Zach Bennett drove in two runs as well. Logan Gaines
(4) hit a long solo home run to lead off the eighth inning.
Andrew tied the game at six after scoring five unanswered runs in the sixth
and seventh innings. SGC’s third pitcher of the day, David O’Neal (3-1,
1.57), entered the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and
halted the rally. He threw a scoreless eighth and ninth inning en route to
the win.
In game one of a Saturday double-header, the Tigers scored four in the first
inning. The rally started with a lead-off walk by Stuart Drew. He stole
second then advanced to third on a single by David Reid-Foley. Andrew
Anderson hit a sacrifice fly that scored Drew. Josh Palmer hit into a 5-4
fielder’s choice that forced out Reid-Foley at second. Palmer then stole
second and moved to third on a wild throw by Andrew’s catcher, Chris Smith.
Gaines walked, putting runners at the corners with two outs. Wesley Morris
answered with a double that scored Palmer and Gaines. Zach Bennett added a
two-out hit of his own that scored Morris. A Chris Thompson fly-out ended
the inning but the damage had been done. SGC wouldn’t need any more runs but
added a few more in the sixth, seventh and ninth.
Stuart Drew and Wesley Morris had two hits. Andrew Anderson’s lone hit was a
solo home run in the top of the ninth, his team-leading sixth of the year.
Anderson and Morris drove in two each. Starter Justin Fordham (3-1, 4.58)
earned the win in seven innings of work. He surrendered just one run on six
hits. He also recorded seven strikeouts.
In the second game on Saturday, starter Frank Ambrosino (4-2, 4.34) baffled
the Andrew offense with a five-hit shut-out. For five innings, the game was
a pitchers’ duel; neither team scored until SGC touched Andrew’s starter,
Steven Barnett, for three runs in the sixth. Barnett lasted 6 1/3 innings
before the Tigers’ offense chased him from the game. SGC added six runs on
six hits in the top of the seventh to put the game away. Three of those runs
came on a Josh Palmer home run, his second of the season. Stuart Drew and
Andrew Anderson had three hits each while Jeremy Donaldson added two of his
own. Palmer drove in four runs and scored twice.
SGC faces Brewton Parker’s JV squad on Thursday in Mount Vernon before
returning to conference play with a weekend series against Darton in Albany.
On April 1 and 3, the Tigers will be in Tifton playing ABAC. SGC returns
home to play East Georgia on April 6. SGC is 5-1 in conference play.
