Tigers Win 2 of 3 Over Gloucester, Brewton-Parker

The South Georgia College Tigers won two of three non-conference match-ups this week, losing to Gloucester County College 9-5 on Tuesday then sweeping Brewton-Parker’s junior varsity squad 13-2 and 10-1 Thursday. All three games were played in Douglas.

Against Gloucester County, Andrew Anderson tried to get things going in the bottom of the first with a two-out solo home run, his team-leading fifth of the season. That would be the only run the Tigers scored until the sixth, when SGC plated two. The Tigers also scored in the eighth to carry a 4-3 lead into the ninth inning. Then the Gloucester bats woke up and touched relievers David O’Neal and Josh Palmer for six runs in the top of the ninth to take a 9-4 lead. SGC added a run in the ninth but couldn’t close the gap. O’Neal (2-1, 1.71) took the loss. Stuart Drew had three hits and Anderson had three RBI in the loss.

In game one against Brewton-Parker on Thursday, Wesley Morris ended the run-rule shortened contest with a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to put the Tigers up 13-2. Caleb Lairsey (1-0, 11.74) earned the win. Logan Gaines had three hits and four RBI.

Things didn’t change much in game two. Jake Gower led the way for SGC with a 3-3, four-RBI performance en route to the 10-1 win. Bryan Petree (1-0, 2.08) notched the win with two innings of work in relief.

The Tigers are now 20-12 overall and resume conference play with a three-game series against Andrew College in Cuthbert this weekend. SGC is on the road until April 6, when they face East Georgia College at home in a 3 p.m. contest.
