Lady Tigers Split Conference Opener Against ABAC
Sometimes, lectures work. On March 9, a nice talking-to from
SGC softball coach Rob Brunel between games one and two of a double-header
against ABAC in Tifton motivated the Lady Tigers to avenge a 7-1 game-one
loss and take the second game with a 9-1 rout in the first conference games
of the year.
In game one, the SGC pitching staff had trouble early and often. Coach
Brunel used a pair of pitchers, Desiree Thomas and Holli Moore, and both had
trouble keeping ABAC off the base paths. “We had too many walks in that
game. We put the ball in play but pitching was our issue,” said Coach
Brunel. The Lady Tigers’ only run came on a solo home run by Chantel
Schroeder. Kasey Morris and Brittany Johnson also hit the ball well for SGC.
Coach Brunel wasn’t very pleased with the way his team played in that first
game. After the aforementioned meeting between games, the Lady Tigers turned
things around and answered with a convincing win to even their conference
record at 1-1. Jessica Cooper had great command and threw a complete game.
Jensen Barrett, Cecily DeMarco, Brittany Johnson and Kasey Morris led SGC
offensively. “We threw strikes, didn’t walk anybody and didn’t make any
errors,” said Coach Brunel.
The win evened the Lady Tigers’ overall record at 8-8. “We’re not in bad
shape. But we’ve got some things to work out,” said Coach Brunel. After
traveling to play Georgia Military College on Thursday, SGC returns home to
face Young Harris Saturday at 3 p.m.
