Tigers Open Conference Play With Two Wins

The second season is here. Conference play began for the South Georgia College Tigers Saturday afternoon with a three-game series at home against the Gordon College Highlanders. SGC took two of three to open the conference with a 2-1 record. Monday afternoon, the Tigers lost to Gloucester County College 12-6 in a slugfest that saw the two teams combine for 24 hits, including four home runs.

After rain postponed the first game of the Gordon series on Friday, SGC split a double-header with the Highlanders Saturday, winning game one 10-6 but dropping game two 10-2. In the game one win, Stuart Drew (3-4, four runs, one RBI), Andrew Anderson (3-4, two runs, three RBI) and Josh Palmer (3-5, three RBI) anchored the SGC offense. Starter Tony Albritton (4-2, 5.08) was the winning pitcher after lasting six innings. Greg Fietsam (2) earned the save.

Gordon starting pitcher Josh Stevenson threw a six-hit complete game in the nightcap en route to a 10-2 win. Stevenson did something few pitchers have been able to do this year – keep the potent SGC offense off balance and off the scoreboard. Justin Fordham (2-1, 5.40) took the loss. Andrew Anderson was the only Tiger with more than one hit.

Sunday afternoon, SGC opened the rubber game of the series with a five-run first inning, two runs of which came from a two-run homer off the bat of Stuart Drew, his second of the year. The Tigers added runs in the second, fifth, sixth and eighth to fend off a steady offensive attack by the Highlanders (three of their players – Kelly Williams, Landon Anderson and Robbie Payne -- homered as well). Frank Ambrosino (3-2, 5.09) came away with the win.

Monday, the Tigers dropped one game to visiting Glouchester County College. Both teams erupted, combining for four home runs in the first four innings. After a rocky start, Gloucester hurler Mike Ney settled down and blanked SGC in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings. In the ninth inning, trailing 12-5, the Tigers scored their last run when Stuart Drew drove in Cole Anderson on a Gloucester error.

The Tigers used the long ball (with maybe a little bit of help of strong winds blowing straight out to center) to score five of their six runs. In the bottom of the second inning, Zack Bennett (1) hit a two-run home run. Two batters later, Cole Anderson (2) hit a two-run shot of his own. In the fourth, Wesley Morris (2) connected for a two-out solo home run to tie the score at five. After Morris’s home run, the SGC bats cooled off while Gloucester plated seven more runs over the last five innings to cruise to a 12-6 win. Scott Groover (0-1, 15.19), the second of six Tiger pitchers in the game, took the loss after lasting just two-thirds of an inning.

SGC now stands at 18-11 on the season and 2-1 in conference. The Tigers faced Gloucester again on Tuesday afternoon but results were unavailable at press time. Thursday, SGC plays the Brewton Parker JV squad in Douglas at 4 p.m. After that, the Tigers hit the road, traveling for their next 11 games (nine of which are in conference). SGC returns to Douglas on April 6 with a 3 p.m. double-header against East Georgia College.
