SGC Men’s Soccer Picks Up Win, Women Sign Pair

The men’s and women’s soccer teams at SGC have both been busy in 2010. The men started their spring campaign on Saturday, March 6 with a 5-4 win over the top Mexican League team.

According to head coach Ken Kirsch, it was a good game and a nice warm-up before the Tigers headed to Flagler College on March 13. Gerald Jonah lead the way scoring two goals, Felipe Nascimento added a goal, as did Pierre St. Amour and Nuno Gourgel. “ We played well in three out of the four quarters, but I still see some technical things we need to clean up,” noted Coach Kirsch. “I am seeing an improvement on the style we are playing but we still need to take better care of the ball and eliminate the turnovers.” Keeper Daniel Williams had eight saves in the game.

The men have three games over the weekend. On March 13, they travel to Flagler College and on Sunday SGC hosts a three-team round robin tournament with South Georgia United U-18 club and Jags U-19 elite squad from Jacksonville.

The women’s soccer program is pleased to announce two signings for the 2010 fall campaign.

Kasie Cheney is a shifty quick forward from Bellview High School in Bellview, Fla. Chelsey Waters is a strong competitive defender/midfield players from Colombia High School in Lake City, Fla.

“Both players will make an immediate impact in our program for the 2010 season. Kasie is a quick forward that can put the ball in the back of the net and Chelsea will bring a strong presence to sow up our defense. Both ladies are have strong academic backgrounds and will fit nicely in our system and style of play,” said Coach Kirsch.
