SGC wins two of three, now 16-9 on season
The Olney Central College Blue Knights halted the South
Georgia Tigers’ winning streak at 10 games Friday after they defeated SGC
6-5 at George Cook Stadium in Douglas. SGC rebounded later that afternoon
against the Southwestern Illinois Blue Storm with an 8-6 win. Sunday, the
Tigers defeated the Glen Oaks Community College Vikings 8-2. SGC has now won
12 out of their last 13 games with conference play beginning on Friday.
Friday, the Blue Knights carried a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth.
Olney starter Aaron Newcomb had been dealing all afternoon and had done a
good job of keeping the SGC offense off balance. Newcomb had kept the Tigers
from scoring for five innings; finally, in the ninth, SGC decided to make a
run at extending its win streak to 11. The first two Tigers – Chris Thompson
and Seth Foster – went down in order. Zach Bennett showed a little patience
at the plate and drew a walk off Newcomb. Cole Anderson answered with a
double. A bad throw allowed pinch runner Jake Gower to score and Bennett to
move to third. Coach Scott Sims decided to send Logan Gaines, who has three
home runs and is second on the team in RBI, to pinch hit for lead-off man
Kenny Anderson. A wild pitch by Newcomb allowed Bennett to score and bring
the Tigers to within one run. Gaines reached base on an infield single,
which put the tying run on first with two outs. The Blue Knights decided it
was time to make a pitching change and closer Lincoln Wagner entered the
game to try to stop the rally. He faced Stuart Drew, who worked the count
and drew a walk. With runners on first and second, Andrew Anderson, the team
leader in home runs, stepped to the plate. Anderson and Wagner battled each
other but this time, the pitcher won. He froze Anderson on a called third
strike.
Starter Tony Albritton (3-2, 4.91) went 6 2/3 innings and took the loss.
David Reid-Foley had a hit and drove in two runs.
Josh Palmer stepped up big in the nightcap against the Blue Storm. Palmer
started the game as the designated hitter and ended up 2-4 with two runs
scored and four RBI. Three of those RBI came on a big home run he launched
in the fifth inning, his first of the year. Palmer finished the game on the
mound, throwing two scoreless innings and picking up the save, which was
also his first of the season. Stuart Drew had three hits, scored twice and
drove in one. Zack Hula (2-1, 6.00), who started for the Tigers, took the
win with five innings of work.
After a day off, SGC returned to action, this time against Glen Oaks. The
Tigers trailed once in the game, and only very briefly. The Vikings scored
their only two runs of the day in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead.
An inning later, SGC plated two to go up 3-2. The Tigers added three in the
fifth and two in the seventh to take a comfortable 8-2 lead. Coach Sims took
the opportunity to give a large percentage of his staff some work Sunday; he
utilized eight pitchers, only two of which (starter Scott Groover and Dylan
Wall) threw more than one inning. Wall (2-0, 5.40), the second pitcher of
the afternoon, earned the win with 1 1/3 innings of work. Reid-Foley had two
hits and three RBI while Philip Culpepper drove in two runs with one
pinch-hit plate appearance.
The Tigers are now 16-9 on the season and begin conference play this weekend
when Gordon College comes to town. SGC and Gordon play one game on Friday at
6 p.m. and resume on Saturday with a double-header at 2 p.m.
