SGC extends win streak to 10 straight, make that 10 in
a row
The SGC Tigers added to their already-impressive winning
streak by taking two games from Lake Michigan Community College Wednesday
afternoon, winning game one game one 6-4 and game two 16-1. Four Tigers –
Logan Gaines (3), Andrew Anderson (4), DJ Hines (1) and Jeremy Donaldson (2)
homered in the second game.
In game one, SGC trailed 4-3 late in the game. In the bottom of the sixth,
Stuart Drew got things going after leading off with a single. He advanced to
second on a bunt by David Reid-Foley, then promptly stole third. The throw
went into left field, allowing Drew to score. After a strikeout by Andrew
Anderson, Josh Palmer singled to left. He moved to third on another single
by Logan Gaines. Chris Thompson lifted a drive to left, which was mishandled
by Tim Moon. Palmer and Gaines scored on the error, giving the Tigers a 6-4
lead. The inning ended with a Zach Bennett strikeout. Greg Fietsam, SGC’s
third pitcher of the day, came in for the top of the seventh and gave up a
pair of two-out hits before retiring DJ Wolnik to end the game.
David O’Neal (2-0, 2.00) earned the win. Fietsam (1) picked up the save.
Josh Palmer was 3-4 with a run scored. Drew went 2-4 with two runs scored
and an RBI. Thompson and Reid-Foley had two RBI.
In game two, the Tigers jumped out to a 7-0 lead after nine total over the
first two innings, including a second-inning two-run home run by Andrew
Anderson, the first of four SGC homers on the day. In the bottom of the
fifth, the Tigers erupted for eight more runs, this time on seven hits and
three errors. Donaldson and Hines homered in the fifth.
Lake Michigan got on the board with one run in the top of the sixth. In the
bottom of the frame, Gaines answered with a solo home run of his own, his
third of the year.
Four SGC pitchers – Justin Fordham, Bray Bishop, Scott Groover and Caleb
Lairsey – combined to give up just one run on three hits. Fordham (2-0,
5.41) took the win. Andrew Anderson drove in four of SGC’s runs, while
Donaldson had three RBI of his own. Seven Tigers had multiple hits.
SGC played two games Friday – one game against Olney Community College and
another against Southwestern Illinois. Results were unavailable at press
time. Sunday, the Tigers face Glen Oaks Community College in Douglas at 1
p.m. Conference play begins on March 12 when Gordon College comes to town
for a 6 p.m. game.
