SGC Softball Rolls to Three Straight Wins
The Lady Tigers have had an up and down beginning to the
2010 campaign, at times showing they can compete with the best and at other
times underachieving mightily. Though at times undisciplined at the plate,
the girls have shown they can score runs. The pitching staff has done a good
job keeping earned runs at a minimum.
Defense – now that’s another story. The Lady Tigers’ defensive woes have
cost them several games this year, and head coach Rob Brunel has worked
extremely hard to get the team back on track defensively.
Maybe things are starting to click. SGC headed into the final weekend of
February with a 4-4 record. A split Friday, Feb. 26 with Florence-Darlington
Technical College, which included an extra-innings win in game two, kept the
Lady Tigers with a .500 record at 5-5. SGC dropped game one 7-2. Between
games, Coach Brunel had a rather spirited conversation with his team that
seemed to work. In game two, the teams headed into the final frame tied at
two. The Lady Tigers held FDTC scoreless in the top of the inning. In the
bottom of the seventh, SGC had runners on second and third with two out but
couldn’t get a run across the plate.
The game went into extra innings. Once again, the Lady Tigers kept FDTC from
scoring. When SGC came in for the bottom half, Coach Brunel made a gutsy
call with two outs and Kacey Morris on third base. With the speedy Tara
Miles at the plate, Brunel called for a suicide squeeze. Miles executed the
bunt perfectly; she reached base safely and Morris made it home for the
winning run.
SGC closed the month with a sweep of visiting Mercyhurst. The Lady Tigers
picked up a big five-inning, 12-0 win in game one followed by another
extra-innings win in the second game. The second game was a back and forth
affair that saw SGC down 6-4 in the seventh after being up 4-3 an inning
earlier. In the bottom of the seventh, the Lady Tigers strung together a few
big hits and emerged from the inning tied at six. Reliever Holli Moore shut
down Mercyhurst in the top of the eighth, giving her a team a great
opportunity for the sweep. With Desiree Thomas at second, Mercyhurst walked
Lindsey Day, who had hit the ball hard all day long. Cecily DeMarco
attempted a bunt but popped up for the first out. With runners on first and
second with one out, Coach Brunel called for another bunt, which this time
was successful. After the bunt, Chantel Schroeder stepped up with runners on
second and third, and one out. She hit the ball sharply up the middle. The
shortstop made a great play but couldn’t get the out, which allowed Thomas
to score the winning run.
SGC begins March two games above .500 with a 7-5 record. “We played very
well over the weekend. We were sluggish in game one Friday but finally woke
up. Overall, I’m pleased with the outcome,” said Coach Brunel. The Lady
Tigers faced Wallace Dothan Tuesday but results were unavailable at press
time. SGC has four double-headers on the road before returning home to face
Wallace Dothan again on March 22 at 1 p.m.
