Loran Smith to visit SGC on March 4
Loran Smith, one of the most well known figures in the
Georgia Bulldog Nation, will speak at South Georgia College on Thursday,
March 4, at 2 p.m. in the William S. Smith Library. The public is invited to
this free event.
Loran,
who hails from Wrightsville (and helped recruit Herschel Walker, who is also
from Wrightsville), walked on to the UGA track team when he was a freshman
in Athens. He dreamed of earning a letter jacket and wanted nothing more to
than to wear that big block “G” while he was a student at Georgia. He made
the team, eventually earned a scholarship and became team captain. Except
for a brief period in the early 1970’s, Loran has always been in Athens. He
has had varied responsibilities with the Bulldogs over the years, including
assistant sports information director, business manager of athletics, and
executive director of the Georgia Bulldog Clubs.
These days, Loran assists with packaging of radio broadcasts, is co-host of
Tailgate Show, and sideline color announcer. He is editor of football game
programs and has authored numerous books, including "GLORY, GLORY" (with
Lewis Grizzard), "Fifty Years on the Fifty," the Orange Bowl story;
"Dooley's Dawgs" (with Vince Dooley); "Between the Hedges," a story of
Georgia's first 100 years of football; "Let a Dead Horse Rest," "Let the Big
Dawg Eat,” (with his wife, Myrna), a collection of tailgate recipes; "Finish
the Drill," the inside story of Georgia's 2002 championship season; "Beloved
Dawgs;" "The Athens Sketch Book;" "The Georgia Football Vault;" and five
books on the Masters.
Loran is also past chairman of the State of Georgia Sports Hall of Fame and
was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1997. He is married to the former Miss
Myrna Warren of Covington. They have two children, Camille and Kent, both
graduates of Georgia.
