SGC Defeats ABAC, Georgia Perimeter
A two-home run performance by third baseman Chris Thompson
on Sunday highlighted a weekend sweep of ABAC and Georgia Perimeter by the
SGC Tigers. SGC has won its last eight games and stands at 12-8 on the
season.
Friday afternoon, ABAC visited the Tigers and looked poised to end SGC’s
winning streak, which at the time stood at six. In the bottom of the
seventh, trailing 2-1, the Tigers exploded for seven runs on five hits to
put the game away. Five of SGC’s runs came on home runs. Andrew Anderson (3)
hit a homer with DJ Hines and Stuart Drew on base. After Anderson’s
three-run blast, Josh Palmer singled, setting the stage for Logan Gaines.
Gaines (2) didn’t waste any time and promptly launched one to left for a
two-run shot of his own. When the inning ended, SGC was up 8-2. ABAC added
two in the eighth and one in the ninth but it wasn’t enough to eclipse the
Tigers. Starter Tony Albritton (3-1, 6.15) earned the win after 7 1/3
innings of work.
The following day, Georgia Perimeter took SGC into extra innings. The Tigers
used a similar template to what they did the day before – scoring most of
their runs in one inning and then plating a few more here and there to make
up the difference. SGC headed into the bottom of the fourth down 5-0. When
the frame ended, the score was tied 5-5. Georgia Perimeter pulled ahead in
the fifth and sixth, and the Tigers tied the score in the seventh and
eighth. At the end of nine innings, the score was knotted at seven apiece.
SGC held Georgia Perimeter scoreless in the top of the tenth. In the bottom
of the inning, Stuart Drew singled with one out. DJ Hines reached on a bunt
single that moved Drew to second. Andrew Anderson singled to pitcher Zach
Mullins, who threw the ball away, allowing Drew to score the winning run.
Greg Fietsam (1-2, 7.71), who threw 4 2/3 innings in relief for starter Zack
Hula, got the win. Chris Thompson was 2-5 with two runs scored and three
RBI. He homered twice – a two-run shot in the fourth and a solo home run in
the seventh.
The Tigers begin a 12-game home stand extending through March 18. SGC plays
Lake Michigan Community College today at 3 p.m. (double -header), Olney
Community College (Illinois) at 3 p.m. on March 5 (one game), Southwestern
Illinois Community College at 6 p.m. on March 5 (one game), and Glen Oaks
Community College on March 7 at 1 p.m. (one game). Conference play begins on
March 12 with a 6 p.m. game against Gordon College.
