Lady Tigers Drop Two to GMC
It’s been feast or famine for the SGC Lady Tigers softball
team in the young 2010 season. Last week against Georgia Military, it was
mostly famine. The Lady Tigers lost a double-header to GMC 7-2 and 10-5. The
SGC pitching staff threw very well; only four of the 17 GMC runs were
earned. The girls also showed they can score runs and battle back from a
deficit; in game two, the Lady Tigers were down 6-1 and fought back to 6-5.
Unfortunately, the team hasn’t played well defensively and they have
suffered mightily as a result.
It’s not that Georgia Military is a bad team. They played well and did what
they had to do win. The Lady Tigers just didn’t help themselves. “We’re
making a lot of mental errors, and we’re not ready for the pace of the game.
We had some of the same struggles in the fall but overcame them and did very
well. We should be able to get past this,” said head coach Rob Brunel.
Several Lady Tigers turned in solid offensive performances. In game one,
Lindsey Day was 2-2 and Jensen Barrett went 2-3. Brittany Johnson and Tara
Miles also played well. In game two, Miles and Barrett were both 2-4. Still,
SGC has been plagued with undisciplined hitting, which has resulted in a lot
of strikeouts. When the girls show a little discipline at the plate, good
things happen. According to Coach Brunel, they are starting to understand
what it takes to compete and are making improvements. “Everything is
fixable. That’s a good thing,” says Coach Brunel.
The Lady Tigers are 3-3 on the season and begin a three-series home-stand
starting tomorrow: Coastal Georgia (February 25 at 1 and 3 p.m.), Mercyhurst
(February 28 at 2 and 4 p.m.) and Wallace Dothan (March 2 at 1 and 3 p.m.).
