SGC Wins Three in a Row, Evens Season Record

The South Georgia College Tigers evened their season record at 8-8 with three important wins in weekend play at home. SGC took a pair of games from Chattanooga State Community College and one game from USC-Salkehatchie during the three-game home-stand. The Tigers showed a little bit of everything during the three games: They fought back from a deficit, overcame sloppy defense (SGC had five errors in the first two games), got a little timely pitching when they needed it and, in the final game, played great defense and used the long ball to score runs.

Game one, which took place against Chattanooga State on Friday afternoon, was a slugfest that saw both teams score runs in bunches throughout the game. SGC won 12-10. Neither team played particularly well defensively; both had three errors each on the day. The Tigers used six pitchers, with Dylan Wall (1-0, 7.36 ERA), the fifth pitcher used by head coach Scott Sims, getting the win. David O’Neal, who threw one scoreless inning, earned the save. Cole Anderson’s 4-5 performance at the plate was tops for SGC. Lead-off man Kenny Sanderson had three RBI, while Logan Gaines and Seth Foster each drove in a pair.

Saturday afternoon, the Tigers faced Chattanooga State in a re-match from the day before. This game followed a similar pattern as Friday’s contest. Both teams had strong offensive performances coupled with more poor defense (three errors by Chattanooga, two by SGC). Josh Palmer (1-1, 4.05 ERA), who pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief of starter Greg Fietsam, earned the win. Andrew Anderson was 2-3 with 3 runs and 3 RBI. Chris Thompson also had 3 RBI.

After a one-game break, the Tigers took the field against USC-Salkehatchie. SGC plated runs at a steady pace, scoring in every inning but the second. Meanwhile, starter Zack Hula (1-1, 5.11) kept the Salkehatchie offense off balance all afternoon. He surrendered just 1 run on 3 hits in 6 innings of work. Bray Bishop closed things out for SGC with a scoreless inning of work. The Tiger offense flexed a little muscle early in the game. Stuart Drew (1), batting second in the line-up, homered to left in the first inning to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. After a scoreless second inning, SGC used the long ball again in the third when Cole Anderson (1) hit a solo shot to lead-off the inning. Drew ended up 2-3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Jeremy Donaldson also had 2 hits and 2 RBI for SGC.

The Tigers travel to Allendale, S.C., on Feb. 24 for a double-header against USC-Salkehatchie. They return home for two weekend games. On Saturday, Feb. 27, SGC faces rival ABAC in Douglas at 1 p.m. The following day, Georgia Perimeter comes to town for one game. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
