SGC Drops Three of Four to St. Johns River CC
The South Georgia College Tigers didn’t have a very fun week
playing the St. Johns River Community College Vikings. The two clubs squared
off in four games – a double-header on Sunday, Feb. 14 in Florida and
another double-header Wednesday, Feb. 17 in Douglas. The Vikings won three
of the four games; they swept the Tigers on Sunday and split with SGC on
Wednesday. The Tigers now stand at 5-8 on the season.
In game one on Sunday, the Tigers had good offensive performances from
Stuart Drew (2-3, 2 runs), Chris Thompson (2-4, 2 runs, 1 RBI), Seth Foster
(3-4, 1 run, 1 RBI) and Josh Palmer (2 RBI) but couldn’t score enough to
overtake the Vikings. Reliever Frank Ambrosino threw well, going 3 1/3
innings and giving up just one run. Greg Fietsam started and took the loss.
St. Johns won 7-6.
Game two was more of the same. The two teams combined for 17 runs on 16
hits, with the Vikings escaping with a 9-8 victory after scoring one run in
the bottom of the seventh off Zack Hula to break an 8-8 tie. Andrew Anderson
hit his second home run of the year, a solo shot that came in the third
inning. Anderson and Kenny Sanderson had two hits apiece. Hula took the
loss.
Three days later, the Tigers and Vikings met up again, this time in Douglas.
Game one was a more lopsided affair with St. Johns winning 10-4. Starter
Frank Ambrosino was the pitcher of record and was credited with the loss.
Chris Thompson was 3-4 with 2 runs scored. He was the only Tiger with more
than one hit.
The Tigers broke a three-game skid against the Vikings with a 5-3 win in
game two. SGC trailed 3-1 going into the bottom of the fifth when the
offense erupted for four runs on three hits to break the game open. A Stuart
Drew single scored two runs in the inning. Former Trojan Jake Gower, who had
walked and moved to third on Drew’s hit, scored on a wild pitch as well.
Gower also had an RBI. Zach Bennett had two hits for SGC. Starter Justin
Fordham allowed three runs in six innings of work en route to the win. Zack
Hula threw a scoreless inning of relief.
SGC faced Chattanooga State Friday, Feb. 19 at 5 p.m. The Tigers play
Chattanooga State again Saturday, Feb. 20 at noon in Douglas. The Tigers
play a second game at 5 p.m. against USC-Salkehatchie. Their next two home
games are Feb. 27 and 28 against ABAC and Georgia Perimeter. Both start at 1
p.m.
