Lady Tigers split with Brewton-Parker JV

After sweeping the Brewton-Parker JV last week in Douglas, the SGC Lady Tigers split games with the Lady Barons in Mount Vernon on Wednesday. Two SGC pitchers, Tiffany Davies and Becca Hewitt, combined for a seven-hit shutout to keep the Brewton-Parker offense off balance and ineffective in game one. The Lady Tigers won 5-0. Game two was a different story; the SGC defense played poorly and allowed seven unearned runs to cross the plate in the 7-1 loss.

In the first game of the double-header, Davies showed solid command early and never let up for five innings. She scattered seven hits, struck out nine and didn’t walk a single batter. Hewitt surrendered a pair of walks in two scoreless innings of work. She also struck out three. “Both of our pitchers threw very well. The defense was solid – we only made one error – and only one base runner made it past second,” said head coach Rob Brunel.

Offensively, Tara Miles, Jensen Barrett, Kacey Morris and Brittany Johnson turned in solid performances. The Lady Tigers scored two runs in the second, one in the sixth and two in the seventh, but still left too many runners on. “We can’t strand runners,” he said.

The Lady Barons didn’t particularly want to drop four straight to SGC and made sure they stopped the bleeding in the second game. SGC’s pitchers, Josie Page and Holly Moore, had good outings but the defense behind them let them down. Page went four innings and surrendered just two hits and two walks. Moore entered the game with no outs and the bases loaded in the fifth and escaped with giving up just two runs. Only two Brewton Parker batters recorded hits off Moore. “Josie and Holly pitched well. We just made too many mistakes. We dropped fly balls and the girls became undisciplined at the plate. The cold weather made things more difficult but that’s no excuse,” said Coach Brunel.

The Lady Tigers stand at 3-1 on the season. They next play at home on Tuesday, Feb. 16 against Georgia Military. Game one starts at 1 p.m. with game two scheduled for a 3 p.m. start time.
