SGC outslugs FSCJ on the road

The SGC Tigers used steady and consistent offense coupled with serviceable work by the bullpen to keep the Florida State College – Jacksonville Stars at bay Thursday afternoon. The Tigers won the 29-hit slugfest 12-7.

The Tigers scored early and often in an effort to thwart any offensive attack the Stars might attempt to launch. SGC scored in six of the nine innings, including four in the top of the first, to hold on to a lead throughout the entire game. The Stars didn’t score more than a single run in any inning until the bottom of the ninth. Trailing 12-4, FSCJ loaded the bases with no outs. Bryant Gibson cleared the bases with a double off reliever Zack Hula to make the score 12-7. Coach Sims didn’t panic and left Hula in. Hula responded and promptly retired the next three batters to end the game.

After getting off to a slow start, Stuart Drew’s bat is starting to heat up. He was 2-4 with two runs scored and two RBI on Thursday. Kenny Sanderson (3-5, one RBI, two runs), Seth Foster (2-3, three RBI, two runs) and DJ Hines (2-4, two RBI, one run) were the leading hitters for SGC. Andrew Anderson and Wesley Morris also had two hits on the day.

Starter Tony Albritton picked up the win after lasting six innings and giving up two runs on five hits. Albritton is the only Tiger pitcher with two wins; he is 2-1 with a 5.93 ERA on the young season. Other pitchers seeing action against the Stars were David O’Neal and Greg Fietsam. Both gave up one run and one hit in one inning of work apiece.

The Tigers play a double header today in Douglas at 1 p.m. against St. Johns River Community College. The game was originally scheduled for Friday, but was postponed due to poor weather.
