Dr. Virginia Carson wins Jackie Wilson Women in
Leadership Award
At
the Douglas-Coffee County Chamber of Commerce’s recent annual banquet, Dr.
Virginia Carson, SGC President, was given the Jackie Wilson Women in
Leadership Award for the tremendous initiative and vision she has exhibited
in two years as president.
During her tenure at SGC, the College has continued a track of growth that
culminated with a Fall 2009 enrollment of 2,000 students – an all-time high.
Spring 2010’s enrollment of 1,927 students is also a record for spring
semester.
Here are just a few of the other accomplishments the College has enjoyed
under her leadership:
-
Expanded SGC to a regional institution by adding an
entry program on the campus of Georgia Southwestern in Americus to the
already existing program in Valdosta and Waycross. Since its opening
last fall the GSW Entry Program enrollment has almost tripled (August
2008)
-
SGC won the silver medal in the University System of
Georgia (USG) Outstanding Customer Service Improvement Initiative Awards
for Enrollment Process Improvement Initiative (October 2008)
-
SGC was reaccredited by SACS in June for 10 years with
not additional follow-up required after formerly being on warning this
previous year (June 2009)
-
SGC held the first fund-raising event in history and
raised almost $30,000 (May 2009)
-
SGC launched a master planning process to include
faculty, staff, students and community members to prepare for growth and
program for the next five years (March 2009)
-
SGC won the gold medal in the USG Outstanding Customer
Service Improvement Initiative Awards for its Initiative to Promote the
Retention of Residential Students in Learning Support (September 2009)
-
Initiated the creation of a comprehensive emergency
preparedness plan, which under the leadership of Ms. Wanda Lloyd
received the national award from the Community College Business Officers
Exemplary Practices Awards (October 2009)
-
In September, SGC broke ground on a $14.5 million,
292-bed state of the art residential facility, which will almost double
the number of students living on campus (September 2009)
-
SGC named one of 30 national finalists for the
University of Florida Futures Assembly Bellwether Awards for the
Initiative to Promote the Retention of Residential Students in Learning
Support (December 2009).
Dr. Carson was pleasantly surprised at being chosen, and she
saluted Mrs. Wilson in her remarks. “To receive something with Jackie
Wilson’s name on it is perhaps the highest honor anyone in this county could
aspire to,” she said.
