Tigers drop three in weekend road trip to Florida
It was a tough weekend for the SGC Tigers. The team took its
first extended road trip of the season and played three games over two days
in Ocala, Fla.. The Tigers limped back home after losing all three by a
combined score of 43-17.
Saturday, SGC played two games – one against Indian River Community College
and the other against Central Florida Community College. The Tigers dropped
game one 11-7. Zach Bennett, who came in the fifth inning for starter Greg
Fietsam, took the loss for SGC. Andrew Anderson was SGC’s top hitter. He was
2-4 with four RBI and a run scored. Three of those RBI came on a three-run
home run home run in the fifth inning, Anderson’s first of the year. Stuart
Drew and Chris Thompson also had a pair of hits for the Tigers.
The Central Florida game was relatively close. Until the bottom of the fifth
inning when Central torched the Tigers for 17 runs on 11 hits en route to a
24-3 win in a run-rule shortened game. Starter Tony Albritton, who went 3
2/3 innings and gave up seven runs (all earned), was the losing pitcher for
the Tigers. Only one Tiger, right fielder Josh Palmer (2-3, one run scored),
had more than one hit.
Sunday, things got a little better for SGC. The Tigers faced Central Florida
again and played a much more even contest, though the outcome was the same.
Central Florida won 8-7 in 10 innings after raking three straight two-out
singles in the bottom of the 10th off reliever Frank Ambrosino. Ambrosino,
the pitcher of record for SGC, threw 4 2/3 innings in relief. Justin Fordham
started and gave up four runs over five innings of work. Freshman David
Reid-Foley went 3-5 with an RBI. First baseman Seth Foster drove in two for
the Tigers. Kenny Sanderson, Stuart Drew, Josh Palmer and Zach Bennett each
had two hits.
The losses drop the Tigers to 3-5 on the season. SGC has a few days off
before traveling back to the Sunshine State to face Florida State College at
Jacksonville on Thursday in a 4 p.m. game. Friday, Feb. 12, the Tigers play
a double-header against St. Johns River Community College in Douglas
beginning at 4 p.m.
