Tigers win two in a row
The SGC Tigers showed their versatility this week with a
pair of wins over two tough Florida opponents. Tuesday afternoon, the Tigers
went on the road to defeat the Tallahassee Community College Eagles 3-1
behind an excellent outing from freshman starter Frank Ambrosino. Thursday,
SGC returned home to face Florida State College at Jacksonville and showed
the 2010 team can outslug an opponent if that’s what it takes to win. The
Tigers defeated the Stars 9-8 in a contest that saw both teams combine for
17 hits and four errors.
In Tuesday’s game, the Eagles did their best to get to Ambrosino but they
couldn’t establish any kind of a rally offensively. TCC put runners on base
in five out of the first seven innings but managed to score just once – on a
one-out sacrifice fly in the second inning. Ambrosino scattered seven hits
over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out three and didn’t walk a single Eagle.
SGC scored in the top of the first, and broke the 1-1 tie in the top of the
seventh when Stuart Drew drove in David Reid-Foley on a ground-out to
second. The Tigers added an insurance run in the top of the ninth when pinch
runner Jamie Fullington scored on a Cole Anderson double.
Ambrosino picked up the win and Zack Hula earned the save. Top hitters for
SGC were Cole Anderson (3-4, one RBI), Josh Palmer (2-4, one RBI) and Wesley
Morris (2-4).
Thursday afternoon, the Tigers jumped out to an early lead over the FSCJ
Stars but nearly lost the game after a four-run rally in the top of the
ninth almost erased SGC’s advantage. Starter David O’Neal did a good job,
giving up four runs (two earned) on three hits in five innings of work. He
left the game with his team ahead 8-4. The Tigers added another run in the
bottom of the sixth to take a 9-4 lead.
The Stars, however, weren’t ready to give up. After three scoreless innings
by relievers Josh Palmer and Justin Fordham, the Stars got to Dylan Wall and
Bray Bishop for four runs in the final inning. Wall replaced Fordham in the
top of the ninth. He gave up a single to Luis Amargo and then walked Alex
Forsyth and lead-off hitter Antonio Walcott. Facing the top of the order
with no outs and the bases loaded, SGC coach Scott Sims sent in lefty Scott
Groover. Willie Lewis hit a sacrifice fly that scored Amargo and moved
Forsyth to third. Coach Sims pulled Groover for sophomore right-hander Bray
Bishop. He faced FSCJ’s shortstop, Shaun Starnes, who scorched a low line
drive to left field. Jamie Fullington couldn’t come up with the ball and
Forsyth, Walcott and Starnes scored on the error. Coach Sims made another
pitching change, this time turning to Zack Hula, who had picked up the save
Tuesday against TCC. Hula retired Cody Frank and JJ Van Winkle, who had
homered off O’Neal in the fourth, to end the game.
O’Neal got the win and Hula earned the save, his second in as many games.
Right fielder Logan Gaines went 3-4 with three RBI and one run scored for
the Tigers. Stuart Drew, Chris Thompson and Andrew Anderson each had two
hits. Seth Foster also drove in a pair. SGC now stands at 3-2 on the season.
The Tigers play three games over the weekend in Ocala, Fla., then head down
to Jacksonville for a rematch with FSCJ on Thursday. Friday, Feb. 12, SGC
returns home to play a double-header against St. Johns River Community
College. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
