Lady Tigers Begin Season, Look to Improve Over 2009
It’s going to be hard for the South Georgia College Lady
Tigers not to improve over their 2009 campaign. Last season was a dismal one
at best for SGC, especially considering the Lady Tigers’ 2008 state
championship and appearance in the national tournament. Head coach Rob
Brunel’s Lady Tigers just couldn’t put together a complete game. They would
hit well one day but play poor defense. The next game they would have good
pitching and defense but wouldn’t hit. It was up and down all year long.
For 2010, Coach Brunel made a few changes, and along at the way has brought
in a talented and mature freshman class that sits ready to take SGC back to
the top of Region XVII. Most notably, the Lady Tigers played a full fall
season of tournaments. The fall schedule gave Coach Brunel the opportunity
to fine tune his line up and give his players, especially the freshmen, some
much needed game experience. “It’s going to come down to pitching. We’re
good offensively and defensively. We scored a lot of runs in the fall and I
expect that to continue,” says Coach Brunel. He has seven pitchers this
year, which provides him with more depth than he’s had in the past. The
veritable wealth of pitching will give Brunel the chance for some good match
ups against his opponents. “We’ve got a few power pitchers who throw in the
low- to mid-60’s. Then we’ve also got some change-of-speed pitchers who are
in the mid- to high-50’s,” he says.
The Lady Tigers also have depth around the diamond. Several players can play
multiple positions, which means Coach Brunel can always make a change or an
adjustment depending on the game situation.
Sophomore Lindsey Day and freshman Kacey Morris hit well in the fall. First
baseman Brittany Yates is back after a broken ankle she suffered last year
before the season began. Left-handed lead off hitter Tara Miles has really
improved. Together with number-two hitter Jensen Barrett, the two of them
will play key roles in igniting the top of the order.
On defense, former CCA standout Morris fills a big hole at shortstop. The
corners are good and the middle of the infield is tight. Catching, which was
a trouble spot for the Lady Tigers last year, is in much better shape. Two
freshmen, Audrey Clearman and Chantel Schroeder, will handle the duties
behind the plate.
“Our conference is strong this year. Darton and Georgia Perimeter will be at
the top, then everyone else will be jumbled up in the middle. Our sophomores
have really improved over last year and we have a very mature freshman
class. We should be in pretty good shape this season,” says Coach Brunel.
The Lady Tigers begin their season today at 2 p.m. against the Brewton
Parker JV team on SGC’s softball field, located behind the gym.
