SGC starts baseball season with 1-2 opening weekend

The South Georgia College Tigers opened the 2010 campaign with a 15-3 loss to Tallahassee Community College on Friday, Jan. 29, followed by a split with Santa Fe Community College on Sunday, Jan. 31. The Tigers played all three games at home.

Friday’s contest was a close one – until the 8th inning. SGC and Tallahassee were knotted at three apiece until the visiting team opened the floodgates over the final two frames, touching four SGC relievers for a total of 12 runs. Josh Palmer, who entered the game to start the 8th, took the loss. Starter Justin Fordham went three innings and surrendered two runs on three hits. Center fielder Cole Anderson had three hits and catcher David Reid-Foley had two hits for the Tigers.

Saturday’s double-header against Santa Fe was moved to Sunday due to inclement weather. The one-day break served starter Tony Albritton well. He threw four shut-out innings in SGC’s 4-2 victory. The Tigers scored a pair of runs in the 2nd on singles by Wesley Morris and Andrew Anderson. In the 6th, designated hitter Logan Gaines hit a one-out, two-run home run that gave the Tigers a 4-0 advantage. Santa Fe broke up the shutout in the top of the 7th with two runs off reliever Zack Hula. Albritton earned his first win of the season.

In game two, the Tigers couldn’t get much offense going. Three Santa Fe pitchers gave up just three hits over seven innings en route to a 4-0 win over SGC. Josh Palmer, Andrew Anderson and DJ Hines each had one hit. Starter Greg Fietsam, who took the loss, surrendered two runs on five hits over five innings. Scott Groover replaced Fietsam to start the 6th and lasted just a third of an inning after giving up a two-run home run to Santa Fe first baseman Mike Miranda. Dylan Wall threw the last 1 1/3 innings to finish the game.

The Tigers travel to Tallahassee on Tuesday, Feb. 2 to face TCC. SGC returns home to play Florida Community College – Jacksonville at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 4.
