SGC Tigers Open Season Friday Afternoon
The South Georgia College Tigers open the 2010 season Friday
at 3:30 p.m. against Tallahassee Community College at George A. Cook Stadium
in Douglas.
The Tigers will be looking to improve on their 24-32 record from last
season. SGC made the playoffs, but ended up getting bounced in the first
round by Georgia Perimeter. The Tigers were in the thick of the GJCAA Region
XVII hunt until a 10-game losing streak at the end of the season ended their
chances.
SGC returns four position players from last year’s squad, most notably
Coffee High product Stuart Drew. Drew, a second baseman, hit .393 last
season from the number-two hole and was named First Team All Conference. He
recently signed with the University of West Georgia, and will move to the
lead-off spot. The other position players are Chris Thompson (INF, 5 home
runs, 48 RBI), Andrew Anderson (INF, .255, 10 stolen bases), and Cole
Anderson (OF, .274).
Four pitchers who saw significant action are also returning. Greg Fietsam,
Tony Albritton, Justin Fordham, and Scott Groover threw a combine 150-plus
innings last year. Another returning player who should figure prominently in
the Tigers’ success this season is Josh Palmer. Palmer, a two-way player who
missed 2009 after hitting 5 home runs and driving in 48 RBI in on the 2008
SGC team that finished second in the conference, give the Tigers a powerful
bat with big-game experience. These players, along with a talented group of
freshmen and transfers, should help the Tigers make it back to the
post-season.
Friday’s game begins at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Santa Fe Community College comes
to town to face SGC at 1 p.m. After an away game against Tallahassee
Community College on Tuesday, the Tigers return home on Thursday to play
Florida Community College-Jacksonville at 4 p.m.
