Dr. Virginia Carson Named to SACS Executive Council

Dr. Virginia Carson, President of South Georgia College, has been re-elected to a one-year term on the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Commission on Colleges’ Executive Council. Dr. Carson was re-elected at the recent SACS Commission on Colleges’ annual meeting in Atlanta.

The thirteen-member Council is the executive arm of the Board of Trustees with primary responsibility for interpreting Commission policy and procedure. It also functions on behalf of the Commission between sessions.

Dr. Carson is one of six members who make up the Georgia delegation. She became interim president at SGC in March 2008, and was named president in January 2009.

She is a member of the Douglas Rotary Club, Coffee County Alliance for the Arts and a current participant in the Douglas-Coffee County Chamber of Commerce’s New Century Leaders program.

Dr. Carson holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia and an M.Ed. and Ph.D. from Georgia State University, all in mathematics education. “Through this appointment, I am exposed to other institutions as well as data and information which can help provide enhanced educational opportunities for our students. Serving on this council will prove very beneficial to our institution and our community,” says Dr. Carson.
