Dr. Virginia Carson Named to SACS Executive Council
Dr.
Virginia Carson, President of South Georgia College, has been re-elected to
a one-year term on the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS)
Commission on Colleges’ Executive Council. Dr. Carson was re-elected at the
recent SACS Commission on Colleges’ annual meeting in Atlanta.
The thirteen-member Council is the executive arm of the Board of Trustees
with primary responsibility for interpreting Commission policy and
procedure. It also functions on behalf of the Commission between sessions.
Dr. Carson is one of six members who make up the Georgia delegation. She
became interim president at SGC in March 2008, and was named president in
January 2009.
She is a member of the Douglas Rotary Club, Coffee County Alliance for the
Arts and a current participant in the Douglas-Coffee County Chamber of
Commerce’s New Century Leaders program.
Dr. Carson holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia and
an M.Ed. and Ph.D. from Georgia State University, all in mathematics
education. “Through this appointment, I am exposed to other institutions as
well as data and information which can help provide enhanced educational
opportunities for our students. Serving on this council will prove very
beneficial to our institution and our community,” says Dr. Carson.
