SGC library receives Japanese book collection
The
William S. Smith Library at South Georgia College has recently received a
collection of “100 Books for Understanding Contemporary Japan” from the
Nippon Foundation.
The 100 books were carefully selected by 10 experts on Japan’s modern
society. They are shelved just outside the library’s Computer Lab and are
now available for circulation. These resources offer credible,
intellectually stimulating information on various aspects of contemporary
Japan. “We are very excited to have this collection of books in our library.
Japan is a nation steeped in rich tradition and history. The Japanese have
made lasting contributions to societies throughout the world, and continue
to be an important player in our global community. This collection of books
will help our students and community patrons learn more about the important
role Japan plays on the world stage,” says Jacqueline Vickers, William S.
Smith Library Director.
“This is terrific news for our campus and our community. At South Georgia
College, we are making great strides in internationalizing our curriculum,
and receiving this collection of books will help us achieve that goal,” says
Dr. Virginia Carson, SGC President.
The Nippon Foundation was established in 1962 as a non-profit philanthropic
organization, active both in Japan and abroad. Since the beginning, its
efforts to bolster the domestic development of Japan have focused largely on
the maritime and shipping fields. In addition, as the years have gone by,
the organization has expanded its activities to include such fields as
education, social welfare and public health, both within Japan and abroad.
