SGC men headed to play-offs, women’s season ends
The SGC soccer season is over for the Lady Tigers, while the
men’s team is preparing for the first round of the play-offs. Last Tuesday,
the men’s team defeated Georgia Military 9-0. The women had a good week,
going 1-1 with a win over Georgia Military and a loss to Oxford Emory
University.
Felipe
Nascimento led the way for the Tigers against Georgia Military with four
goals, adding to his region-leading total of 21 goals for the year. He also
had two assists. Lawrence Anuforo added two goals and had an assist. Keeper
Daniel Williams earned his third shutout on the year. Coach Ken Kirsch
brought only freshmen to the game to get a glimpse of the future.
The Tigers finished their season Sunday against Middle Georgia with a 3-1
loss to the Warriors. Nascimento had an assist, and finished the season with
the conference scoring title. SGC ended the season 8-7-1 and were sixth in
the nation in scoring. Today, they play their first-round play-off game
against the Young Harris Mountain Lions in Young Harris. “I like our chances
up at Young Harris. We played them strong when we played them up there last
time. losing 2-3. As long as we bring a strong work ethic and limit our
mistakes, I think we can go up there and get a win and head to the Final
Four next weekend,” said Coach Kirsch.
The Lady Tigers defeated Georgia Military 1-0 on a Jody Bethune goal for
SGC’s fourth win of the season. The following day, the Lady Tigers lost 3-0
to Oxford Emory University. Ellie Schultz played a phenomenal game, but a
lack of depth hurt SGC. The women wrapped their season against Middle
Georgia last Sunday with a 1-0 loss. The Lady Tigers finished with a 4-9
record and did not make the play-offs.
