SGC to present piano, cello concert on Oct. 27
On Tuesday, Oct. 27, the South Georgia College Cultural
Events Committee will present a very special program by two talented
musicians. Duo Intermezzo, who are Ruth Berry and Kevin Pollock, will
perform As Time Goes By, a harvest celebration of song, at 7 p.m. at
McGourik Auditorium inside Peterson Hall.
This free concert celebrates and reflects upon the importance of music in
the cycles of people’s lives. This program features creative settings for
cello and piano of art songs, spirituals and hymns in addition to unique
arrangements of popular classical and contemporary standards.
Since moving to Georgia in 1990, Ruth has enjoyed a number of musical
adventures in the southeast as a performer, music educator, artistic
director and administrator. After holding the position of principal cello of
the Augusta Symphony and Augusta Opera for 16 years, Ruth concentrated her
efforts on the activities of the Magellan String Quartet and its residency
at Georgia Southern University in addition to work for the Greenville SC
Symphony as Education Director. Ruth now devotes her creative and
educational energies to Duo Intermezzo and the other musical ensembles of In
Praise of Music, in addition to coaching in her private studio. In the
summer months, Ruth travels to New York to visit family and perform with the
Glimmerglass Opera Orchestra where she performs in the cello section and
specializes in continuo work for 17th and 18th century repertoire on baroque
and modern cello.
Ruth completed her bachelor’s degree at Boston University School of Music,
where she majored in cello performance (pupil of cellist Leslie Parnas) and
musicology. Continuing her studies in musicology at Cornell University, Ruth
studied historical performance practice with John Hsu and Malcolm Bilson,
completed courses for a doctorate in musicology, and received a Master’s
degree featuring a thesis on the music of John Harbison.
Kevin has been an active musician and teacher in the southeast for more than
twenty years. He is an acclaimed pianist, baritone soloist, and conductor.
In addition to his busy performing schedule with Duo Intermezzo, Kevin
serves as music director at Warren Baptist Church, prep school chorus
director at Westminster Schools of Augusta, and is owner and principal
instructor of Pollock Music Studios at Turner's Keyboards in Augusta.
Staying close to his boyhood home, Kevin attended Augusta College as a vocal
and piano performance major. He studied piano with Artemesia Thevaos from
1987 until her retirement from teaching in 2001. Kevin currently studies
with Lydia Porro Milham, Artemesia's duo-concert partner. He has also
studied in the vocal studio of William F. Toole from 1988-2004.
Kevin is owner and principal instructor of Pollock Music Studios at Turner's
Keyboards in Augusta. Music is a binding thread within the Pollock
household. Kevin's wife, Andrea Pollock, is an active lyric soprano as well
as a voice and piano instructor at Pollock Music Studios. They have one
daughter, Sophie, who is a budding young pianist.
