Commission on Women

Janice Jackson, a South Georgia College nursing student from
Homerville, has received the prestigious Women of the Year Scholarship from
the Georgia Commission on Women in Atlanta.
Jackson
is a non-traditional commuter student from Homerville, and received the
$1,000 unrestricted award after being nominated by Dr. Frank Holiwski. The
requirements for this scholarship were as follows: The applicant had to be a
Georgia resident attending college with at least a 3.0 grade point average.
“ I seen the posting up in SGC’s financial aid office and the requirements
sounded like me, so Dr. Holiwski, my psychology professor eagerly agreed to
submit the nomination for me,” commented Jackson. Jackson especially thanks
Dr. Holiwski for the nomination for the award.
The Georgia Woman of the Year Committee was established by Georgia
Commission on Women in 1996, to award deserving women scholarships in
Georgia’s colleges and universities.
Jackson was very happy to receive the award. She has currently returned to
school after a 25-year break. “I found out that what was missing in my life
was learning new and challenging things,” stated Jackson. She also stated
that attending school is one thing that she loves the most. She says that
she has been able to intertwine her life experiences and along with new
information, which broadens her horizons. “I want to leave a legacy for my
children, grandchildren, and community,” says Jackson. She is the president
of SGC’s Psi Beta Club for psychology majors and vice-president of the
Psychology Club.
Jackson would like to encourage all SGC students and faculty to step and
take the initiative to anything that they want to do. “All it takes is
applying yourself and staying focused. Nothing beats a failure but a try.
The sky is the limit. You need to spiritually connect to a higher power
whether it is Jesus, Yahweh, or Allah. Step out of your box. Challenge
yourself and mind. Learn something new,” says Jackson. If there was one more
thing left for Jackson to tell SGC students it would be the famous UNCF
slogan, “A mind is a terrible thing to waste.”
