SGC Soccer Hits Rocky Spot With Losses To Middle
Georgia, Young Harris
The South Georgia College soccer teams ran into a little trouble last week,
dropping conference games to Middle Georgia on Wednesday, Sept. 16 and Young
Harris on Saturday, Sept. 19.
Both the men’s and women’s teams had terrible days against Middle Georgia.
They lacked energy and could not match the Warriors’ intensity. The one
shining spot in the Lady Tigers’ 8-0 loss was keeper Laura Navarro, who
registered 15 saves in the game.
Middle Georgia shut-out the men 4-0. The Tigers couldn’t muster any offense
and were beaten to the ball throughout the game. It’s hard to score under
those conditions, and Middle Georgia took advantage of every opportunity the
Tigers gave them.
On Saturday, the women improved, but still came up short, losing 5-1. The
Lady Tigers had been on a five-half scoreless streak. That came to an end in
the second half against Young Harris when Jody Bethune scored. Rebecca
Carlin had the assist. Navarro played well again, turning in seven saves.
“Young Harris scored three goals in the first 12 minutes and we were shell
shocked. But we responded and played well the rest of the game,” said SGC
soccer coach Ken Kirsch.
The men lost in a thrilling 3-2 game against Young Harris. It was a strong,
competitive game with quick, good plays. Young Harris went up 1-0 in the
first half and then scored a quick second half goal. SGC responded with a
goal from Nuno Gourgel off an assist from Steven Kaelin and Felipe
Nascimento. Young Harris scored again to take a 3-1 advantage but Kaelin
responded with a goal on a nice set up pass from Joao Mendes. “We had
several chances near the end but could not find the back of the net. I was
pleased with our effort and game quickness and at times. We really knocked
the ball around well,” said Coach Kirsch. Josh Brooks had six saves in the
loss.
Sunday’s games against Truett-McConnell were cancelled due to inclement
weather.
SGC next plays at home against Brewton Parker today at 5p.m. The men are
4-3-1 on the season, while the women are 2-3.
