Lady Tigers strong on talent, short on experience

The pre-season has come to a conclusion in which the SGC Lady Tigers went 0-1-1 with a tie with Tallahassee Futbol Club (1-1) and a loss to Thomas University (0-2). The women’s squad is young; 14 out of the 16 players are freshmen.

Top recruits for 2009 are Rebecca Carlin, midfield (Conyers); Natalie Ochoa, defender (Miami, Fla.); Patrcia Sandigo, midfield/defender (Miami, Fla.); Mackenzie Rexroth, midfield (Valdosta); Marcillee McBeam, midfield/forward (Kingston, Jamaica); and Jody Bethune, midfield (Kingston , Jamaica).

Coach Ken Kirsch is leaning on returning sophomore Dana Solomon, defender (Douglas) and Ellie Shultz, forward (Newbern, N.C.) for leadership and to help acclimating the newcomers to the college game. Coach Kirsch believes his teams will be competitive in every game and has more talent than in years past, but may lack in the depth area. “We have some very talented players but we will lack some experience but that will come. We preach sacrifice of individual praise for our common purpose of the team. We will be very strong defensively which will keep us in every game but it will take some time to find our offensive game,” he says.

The women open up regular season play this Sunday, Aug. 30 at home against Gordon College followed by another home game on Wednesday against Georgia Military College. “It will be a process but my team will be very disciplined, play great defense, and work towards getting better every practice, every day, and every game. We will play as one unit, and this is the key to success,” says Coach Kirsch.

Coach Ken Kirsch’s staff includes local coach Brandon Bush for the women’s team. “Coach Bush brings a wealth of soccer knowledge and we are fortunate to have him on our staff,” added Coach Kirsch. “We hope to create a buzz in Douglas this season so we encourage all to come out and support your SGC Lady Tigers.”
