Construction begins on new dorms at SGC
Construction has begun on a new residential housing unit on
the campus of South Georgia College.
The project, known as Tiger Village Phase II, will be a three-story, 292-
bed facility. Thursday, Aug. 6, work crews started prepping the site upon
which Tiger Village II will sit. The new dorms will be located on the
southwest portion of the campus, right beside Shannon Hall and near the
college’s baseball stadium.
Completed in 2007, Tiger Village, which houses 252 students in modern two-
and four-bedroom apartments, has been an immediate hit and has been filled
to capacity since it was completed. The number of students filing housing
applications continues to increase, and the older dorm facilities on campus
are used to house overflow from Tiger Village. New student housing is an
important component in recruiting more students to any campus, and SGC is
confident that Tiger Village II will bring even more students to the
college. “We are excited about this project. As we plan three to four years
down the road, Tiger Village Phase II will figure prominently in our
strategy to bring even more students to South Georgia College. It is also
important in our plan to create a more student-centered community here on
campus, which adds to the quality of student life and creates economic
opportunities for our community,” says Dr. Virginia Carson, SGC president.
Ambling University Development Group of Valdosta, which is the same team
that built the original Tiger Village, is constructing Tiger Village II.
Financing for the project has been made possible through a public-private
partnership among the Board of Regents, South Georgia College Foundation and
the Coffee-Atkinson County Development Authority. “We would like to thank
our friends of the college – our local officials, the development
authorities in Coffee and Atkinson counties, the Board of Regents, and, of
course, the South Georgia College Foundation,” says Dr. Carson. “Each of
these agencies recognizes the important role that SGC plays in this region.
A growing community college creates jobs and makes significant contributions
to the local economy. Tiger Village II will play a major role in building an
even brighter future for this institution.”
The college will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on Sept. 10. The project is
scheduled to be completed in time for students to move in for fall 2010.
