SGC earns 10-year re-accreditation from SACS

On Thursday, June 25, South Georgia College received notification from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Commission on Colleges that SGC has been reaccredited for 10 years.

In addition, SGC was removed from Warning and is now on a routine accreditation cycle. The next paperwork SGC must submit is the routine five-year report. “This is a significant accomplishment and the entire SGC team worked very diligently to ensure this outcome. This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the faculty and staff of this institution,” said SGC President Dr. Virginia Carson.

On July 11, 2008, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Commission on Colleges placed South Georgia College on a sanction and requested SGC submit a report addressing three specific principles of accreditation. The three recommendations were in the areas of a Quality Enhancement Plan, institutional effectiveness, and college-level competencies.

Despite the sanction, South Georgia College remained accredited by the Commission on Colleges. SGC immediately implemented an in-depth and intense long-range plan to address these areas of concern and earn reaffirmation of its accreditation through SACS.

After completing those steps, South Georgia College submitted a comprehensive response to all three recommendations on April 14. The response included data for the previous two years that documented assessment, improvements in the assessment process, and use of assessment results to improve student learning.

“Today’s news validates our work and proves that South Georgia College continues to progress in all areas of higher education. I cannot say enough about the persistence of our faculty and staff in addressing this issue. They have worked tirelessly for almost a year, and are to be commended for the time and effort they devoted to resolving this matter,” said Dr. Carl McDonald, Vice President for Academic Affairs.
