Lady Tigers end skid, sweep Andrew
The SGC Lady Tigers finally put a couple of W’s on their
record this week after defeating Andrew College 9-1 and 7-4 on the road
Wednesday.
In game one, Tiffany Davies threw as well as she has all season long. Davies
held Andrew in check while the Lady Tigers pulled ahead 3-1. In the top of
the seventh, SGC scored six runs to ice the game. Tara Miles hit an inside
the park home run down the right field line, and the Lady Tigers’ offense
came through with disciplined at-bats that resulted in timely hits.
Jessica Cooper did a good job of baffling Andrew’s offense in game two. She
was in control and hit her spots all afternoon. “That’s what we’ve been
looking for all season,” said head coach Rob Brunel.
SGC had a few trouble spots in the second game but remained calm and didn’t
panic. In the seventh inning, Andrew had runners at first and second with
two outs. A pop-up on the infield fell in, which sparked a brief rally that
gave Andrew a little hope. Coach Brunel opted to send in Shannon Carter to
relieve Cooper. It took Carter just four pitches to record the final out and
preserve the sweep.
The middle of the batting order hit the ball well all day. Lead-off batter
Crystal Greer was solid at the plate in both games. She played a key role in
the Lady Tigers’ success. “When she gets on, things go well,” said Coach
Brunel. “If we’d been playing like this all year, it would have been a great
year.” Lindsey Day, Cecily DeMarco, Megan Hartley and Tiffany Davies also
hit well for SGC.
The Lady Tigers finish the season Tuesday in Douglas against ABAC. First
pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
