Lady Tigers fall to Gordon College
Friday afternoon, the Gordon Lady Highlanders took a
double-header from the SGC Lady Tigers in Barnesville by scores of 3-2
(eight innings) and 5-4. Gordon won both games in dramatic fashion, taking
the first game with an eighth-inning walk-off home run and winning game two
in the bottom of the seventh with a close play at the plate.
SGC and Gordon remained tied 0-0 through seven innings in game one. In the
top of the eighth, Megan Hartley went to second base. Tara Miles bunted her
to third, putting the go-ahead run 60 feet away. Then Morgan Vereline
launched the first home run of her career to put the Lady Tigers up 2-0. SGC
didn’t score again in the inning, and took a two-run advantage into the
bottom of the inning.
Instead of bunting the runner at second over to third, which is the most
commonly-used approach to an extra inning contest, the first batter of the
inning swung away and popped out to first. The next batter singled to put
runners on first and third with one out. The Lady Highlanders then sent
Leighann Newberry to the plate to pinch hit. On the first pitch she saw,
Newberry hit a three-run walk-off home run to win the game.
In game two, SGC jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. The Lady Highlanders
fought back and scored four in the third to tie the game. The score remained
tied until the bottom of the seventh. With one out and a runner on first, a
Lady Highlander bunted but an SGC error allowed her to reach safely. That
put runners on the corners with one out. The next batter hit a grounder to
second, which Hartley fielded perfectly. She made a great throw home but the
runner managed to slide just under the tag for the winning run.
Wednesday, SGC faces Andrew College in Cuthbert. The Lady Tigers finish the
season on April 28 at home against ABAC.
