Gordon sweeps SGC in Barnesville
The SGC Tigers fell to 7-14 in conference play after losing
three games over the weekend to the Gordon Highlanders in Barnesville.
Gordon won all three games by the following scores: 7-3, 4-3 (10 innings)
and 5-4.
In game one, which took place Friday afternoon, starter Greg Fietsam (4-6,
4.66) went 5 1/3 innings, giving up six runs (three earned). Relievers
Jamaal Smith and Bray Bishop finished the game for the Tigers.
SGC scored two in the third and one the seventh, but couldn’t overcome a
Highlanders team that seemed determined not to lose. Justin Roberts had
three hits and Chris Thompson drove in two of the Tigers’ runs.
SGC battled in the second game of the series but still came up short. Ryan
Whiddon (3-4, 3.97) had a great outing, going 7 2/3 innings and surrendering
just three runs (two earned) while striking out three Highlanders. Jamaal
Smith (4-5, 4.68), who gave up one run in 1 2/3 innings of relief, took the
loss.
The Tigers scored one run each in the first, fifth and seventh innings,
while Gordon scored three in the fifth. The score remained tied through nine
innings. In the top of the tenth, SGC went down in order. The Highlanders
scored the game winning run on a bases-loaded single by Aaron Dobbs.
Keenan Ivey had three hits for SGC. Austin Palmer homered in the seventh
inning, his second of the year.
In SGC’s third game of the weekend, the Tigers led Gordon most of the
contest. However, with SGC holding on to a 4-3 advantage, the Highlanders
scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good.
Despite taking the loss, starter Michael Baker (2-1, 4.14) remains one game
above .500 on the season. Keenan Ivey was 2 for 3 with a run scored. Jamaal
Smith had three hits, one of which was his first home run of the season.
The Tigers wrap up the season this week with a Wednesday game against ABAC
in Tifton and a weekend series on the road against Young Harris. SGC is
holding on to a playoff spot with the number seven ranking in the
conference. The Tigers are 24-26 overall.
