Drew doubles three times in SGC loss to Darton
Despite a three-hit day by second baseman Stuart Drew and
first baseman Lee Hall, the South Georgia College Tigers lost an important
conference game Wednesday afternoon to the Darton Cavaliers in Albany by a
score of 7-6.
The Tigers kept pressure on Darton all afternoon, and plated runs in the
first, second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. However, SGC never had a
lead after a complete inning, thanks to a pair of big innings by the
Cavaliers. Darton jumped out to an early advantage with a three-run first,
and added one run in the third and three more in the fifth.
SGC trailed the Cavaliers 7-4 heading into the sixth inning and mounted a
charge that fell just short of tying the game. Hall led off with a single to
left center. After an Andrew Anderson pop out, pinch hitter Evan Plys
reached on a walk. With runners on first and second and one out, Drew
doubled – one of his three on the day – to score Hall and advance Jake
Gower, who was pinch running for Plys, to third. Justin Roberts hit a
sacrifice fly to right center, which scored Gower and moved Drew over to
third. A Keenan Ivey line out ended the inning. SGC scored two runs on two
hits, but still trailed 7-6. Neither team would score the remainder of the
game.
SGC used six pitchers against Darton. Scott Groover (1-1, 5.59), the third
pitcher of the afternoon, took the loss. Drew was 3 for 5 with two RBI and a
run scored, while Hall went 3 for 4 and scored three times. Chris Thompson
also had a pair of hits, including a solo home run in the fifth inning on a
3-0 count. The homer was his fourth of the season.
Things don’t get any easier for SGC as the season winds down. The Tigers are
fighting for a play-off spot, and have six more conference games remaining.
They face Gordon in a three-game series this weekend in Barnesville, and
finish the season next weekend on the road with a three-game set against
Young Harris, the current number-three ranked junior college baseball team
in the country. SGC is 24-23 overall and 7-11 in conference play.
The top eight teams in the conference face each other in a best-of-three
series on May 1-3. The four winners will play for the conference
championship in Douglas at Crider Field on May 8-10.
