Andrew wins the battle of the Tigers, takes two of
three
The South Georgia College Tigers fell to 4-11 in conference
play after dropping two out of three games to the Andrew College Fighting
Tigers Saturday and Sunday in Douglas.
For the second weekend in a row, inclement weather interrupted play; instead
of playing on Friday and Saturday, the games were played Saturday and
Sunday. And Sunday’s game was called in the eighth inning due to lightning.
Andrew swept a double-header on Saturday, winning game one 9-4 and taking
game two 6-3. SGC bounced back on Sunday, winning the rain-shortened game
7-3.
Ryan Whiddon (2-4, 4.33) took the loss in game one. Whiddon lasted six
innings and gave up nine runs (five earned) on eight hits. After scoring one
run in the second inning, Andrew followed in the third with four runs. The
Fighting Tigers never looked back, adding runs in the fifth and seventh
innings.
SGC could only muster one run in the first, second, fourth and eighth
innings. Designated hitter Chris Thompson hit his second and third home runs
on the year; both solo shots that came in the second and eighth innings. He
was 2 for 3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Stuart Drew and Justin Roberts
also had two hits for SGC.
In game two, SGC scored its only runs in the first inning. Andrew’s starter,
Josh Carr, settled down after that and cruised to a complete-game victory.
James Hickey (4-5, 5.70) took the mound for the Tigers and made it 4 1/3
innings before coming out. He gave up four runs (two earned) on five hits,
and was the pitcher of record for SGC. The Tigers could only muster four
hits in the game.
Game two saw SGC’s Greg Fietsam (4-5, 4.76) last eight innings for the win.
The Fighting Tigers managed just three runs on three hits in the contest.
SGC scored one run in the third, and three each in the fifth and eighth
innings. Brandon Collins and Justin Roberts had three hits each, while Zack
Kilday had two. Andrew Anderson and Roberts had a pair of RBI.
The Tigers are now 20-22 overall with 10 games remaining. Tuesday, SGC
hosted Gordon; results were unavailable at press time. Thursday, ABAC comes
to town for a 6 p.m. game at Crider Field. The Stallions return on Saturday,
April 11, for the final home game of the regular season. Saturday is also
Recreation Day and Sophomore Recognition Day. At 12:30 p.m., the youth teams
with Douglas-Coffee County Parks and Recreation Department will be
recognized by team. They will also be on the field with the Tigers during
the National Anthem. Youth players and their parents get in free.
Sophomores will also be recognized between games, and several free oil
changes courtesy of Clifton Matthews at Shell Rapid Lube will be given away.
In addition, SGC hats and t-shirts will be given away as well.
First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
