SGC splits double-header with Brewton-Parker

South Georgia split a double-header with the Brewton-Parker JV team Thursday afternoon, winning game one 4-2 in nine innings and dropping game two 12-11.

The two teams finished regulation tied at two and headed into extra innings. Neither team scored in the eighth. In the ninth, SGC pulled ahead when Jake Gower and Keenan Ivey scored on a two-out single by Blake Jenkins. Justin Newsome, the third Tiger pitcher used in the game, retired Brewton-Parker in order in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the win. He was the pitcher of record, recording his first win of the season. Brandon Collins (5) homered for the Tigers to lead off the fourth inning.

The second game of the day was a wild one. SGC had a 3-2 lead after 3 ½ innings. Then Brewton-Parker opened up the game with a nine-run bottom of the fourth to go up 11-3. The Tigers responded by scoring eight runs, including four in the top of the seventh, over the next three innings to tie the game at 11.

Apparently, Brewton-Parker didn’t feel like taking game two into extra innings. Two Brewton Parker batters singled and advanced a base on an error in the outfield. With runners on second and third, and one out, a wild pitch brought home the winning run.

Jamaal Smith, the sixth SGC pitcher of the afternoon, threw just 1/3 of an inning and took the loss. Offensively, Keenan Ivey (2 for 4, two runs, two RBI) and Jake Gower (2 for 2 with a run and three RBI after pinch hitting in the fifth inning) led the Tigers. Lee Hall and Chris Thompson also had two hits for SGC.

The Tigers travel to Jacksonville Saturday to face FCCJ. Sunday, SGC hosts FCCJ at 2 p.m. Conference play resumes on March 28 against Truett-McConnell in Cleveland.
