Lady Tigers improve at FCCJ tourney
If the SGC Lady Tigers are going to turn their season
around, now would be a good time to start. And, after a solid showing at the
FCCJ tournament in Jacksonville, Fla., this past weekend, it looks like the
team is playing with a sense of urgency.
The Lady Tigers went 1-3 over the two-day tournament, but showed some solid
signs of improvement. Most notably, pitcher Shannon Carter threw well all
weekend and had good command of her pitches. She has had a problem with
balls that haven’t been moving this season. This weekend, her pitches were
lively and difficult to hit. “I think Shannon turned a corner for us. She
threw very well,” said head softball coach Rob Brunel.
After losing 5-3 to Florence-Darlington and 6-0 to Tallahassee Community
College, the Lady Tigers faced El Paso Community College and picked up their
only win of the weekend. SGC won the game 9-3, thanks in large part to an
early offensive attack that never let up. The Lady Tigers scored three in
the second, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the seventh.
Brittany Johnson, Megan Hartley and Carter were all 3 for 4, while Morgan
Vereline went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBI.
Josey Page picked up the win. She went five innings and struck out two. “She
did a good job keeping them off balance all day,” said Coach Brunel. Carter
threw the sixth and seventh innings for the save. She gave up just two hits
and one unearned run. Coach Brunel said Carter seemed to be more in command
than in the past and finally made the adjustments she’s needed to make all
season.
In game four, SGC lost a heart-breaker to FCCJ 3-2. In the seventh, Carter
broke a 1-1 tie with an RBI single that gave the Lady Tigers a 2-1 lead. In
the bottom of the inning, Tiffany Davies, who threw a complete game, retired
the first two batters. Then two weak bloop singles fell in behind third to
put runners on first and second. The next batter hit a double off a curve
ball that stayed up in the zone a little too long. The hit scored one to tie
the game at two and left runners on second and third with two outs. A hard
ground ball to third then took a bad hop and allowed the winning run to
score.
Vereline (1 for 1), Carter (1 for 2) and Tara Miles (1 for 2) provided most
of the offense. “We played well overall. It seems that our players are
maturing and they’re doing the small things well. Our pitching is improving
and we’re getting good movement on the ball,” said Coach Brunel.
Ten out of the remaining 11 SGC double-headers are against conference
opponents. The next four series are on the road; the Lady Tigers return home
on April 1 to face Coastal Georgia at 2 p.m.
