Georgia Perimeter takes two of three from SGC
The Jaguars of Georgia Perimeter College took two out of
three from the SGC Tigers Saturday and Sunday at Crider Field. Georgia
Perimeter won game one of a Saturday double-header, 10-1, then the Tigers
picked up a win in game two, 9-6. Sunday, the Jaguars defeated the Tigers
5-3 in 10 innings.
Game one starting pitcher Jamaal Smith (2-3, 5.76 ERA) surrendered six runs
on eight hits (all earned) in four innings of work. Tony Albritton worked
the final three innings and gave up four runs (one earned).
The SGC offense couldn’t get anything going against Georgia Perimeter’s Rob
Hefflinger, who tossed a complete game two-hitter for the win. SGC’s only
run came in the bottom of the second when Corey Meharg singled in Brandon
Collins with one out.
Meharg and Stuart Drew had the only hits for the Tigers.
Game two turned out much better for the home team. SGC benefitted from
another strong performance by James Hickey (4-2, 4.58), who gave up four
runs (three earned) in 7 1/3 innings. Greg Fietsam pitched the final 1 2/3
innings in relief.
The Tiger offense scored two runs in the first, third and fourth innings,
and added three in the eighth. Stuart Drew (3 for 5, two runs, one RBI),
Keenan Ivey (3 for 4, one run, one RBI) and Austin Palmer (2 for 4, two
runs) led the offense for SGC. Brandon Collins also drove in two runs.
In game three Sunday, the Tigers carried a 3-1 lead into the ninth inning.
Starter Ryan Whiddon (2-2, 3.74) was one out away from a complete game win
when the wheels came off. With two outs and a runner on first, Whiddon hit
Matt Bishop to put runners on first and second. A Denver Stovall single
scored both runners and tied the score at three. Greg Fietsam relieved
Whiddon and retired Hunter Pope for the final out of the inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, Stuart Drew and Justin Roberts both reached on
walks but were unable to score. The Jaguars made the most of their half of
the tenth. After pinch hitter Jason Dodson singled, Trent Freeman hit a
two-run home run to give Georgia Perimeter a 5-3 lead. Justin Newsome
replaced Fietsam and made it out of the inning without any more damage.
However, the Tigers went quietly in the bottom of the tenth and the Jaguars
left Douglas with the series win. SGC is 17-15 overall and 3-6 in
conference. Wednesday, the Tigers travel to Mount Vernon to play the Brewton
Parker JV in a 4 p.m. double-header. After playing FCCJ in Jacksonville
Saturday afternoon, SGC will face FCCJ in Douglas on Sunday at 2 p.m.
