Lady Tigers improving but wins still scarce

The SGC Lady Tigers didn’t get a win Thursday afternoon, but they played two tight games against a solid conference opponent in the Darton Cavaliers, and head coach Rob Brunel is happy with the way his team is improving.

“We’re playing better and getting runners on. Darton has a very good team and these were two close games,” he said. SGC lost game one 3-1, and game two 5-1.

Tiffany Davies, who has emerged as a solid pitcher and hitter, threw a very good game. She went seven innings and gave up four hits and two walks. She also struck out two. In addition, she went 2 for 3 at the plate.
The game was tied going into the sixth inning. A two-out error by SGC allowed one run to score to give Darton a 2-1 advantage. They added another run in the seventh to go up 3-1. The Lady Tigers had a chance in the bottom of the inning. Crystal Greer tripled with a runner on; however, the runner was thrown out at the plate.

In game two, Shannon Carter started and had a solid outing. She struck out four Cavaliers and walked three. She scattered six hits but also hit a pair of batters.

SGC scored in the sixth inning on a Megan Hartley single that scored Tara Miles. “We’re getting better. Our execution was OK against Darton. We just didn’t hit well with runners in scoring position. We’ll get things straightened out as we head into conference play,” said Coach Brunel.

ABAC is next up for the Lady Tigers. They square off on March 10 in Tifton. SGC doesn’t play at home again until April 1, when Coastal Georgia comes to town.
