SGC softball drops two games to FCCJ
The South Georgia College Lady Tigers softball team, though
still winless on the season, showed some signs of improvement in Tuesday’s
double-header at Florida Community College –Jacksonville.
The Lady Tigers put themselves in a position to win game one but lost 7-5
after a great defensive play in the seventh inning stranded the tying run on
second base. In game two, FCCJ won 6-0, thanks in large part to four total
SGC errors in the fifth and sixth innings.
In game one, FCCJ led 6-0 after four innings. The Lady Tigers’ bats finally
showed some life in the fifth, and SGC plated one run. FCCJ scored in the
bottom of the inning to go up 7-1. Coach Rob Brunel’s team chipped away in
the sixth, scoring two runs. In the seventh, SGC rallied to score two more
to get within two runs. With two outs, the Lady Tigers had runners on second
and third with Tiffany Davies at the plate. Davies laced a line drive to
center field that looked like a game-tying double. However, the FCCJ center
fielder made a great catch that ended the rally and the game.
Megan Hartley was 2 for 4 with two runs scored, Cecily DeMarco was 3 for 3
with two RBI and Lindsey Day was 1 for 3 with two RBI. Shannon Carter
started for the Lady Tigers and gave up five earned runs over four innings.
SGC played a much better defensive game than the team did against Georgia
Military. Tara Miles and Halle Browning both played very well. “Everybody
played better defensively,” said Coach Brunel.
Jessica Cooper started game two for the Lady Tigers and threw a complete
game. She took the loss in the 6-0 defeat. However, she only gave up one hit
in the contest. FCCJ held on to a scant 1-0 lead after four innings. Then
the SGC defense ran into a few problems. FCCJ scored two runs in the fifth
on one error and three more runs in the sixth on three SGC errors.
Miles had the Lady Tigers’ only hit of the game.
“Overall, we played better. We didn’t look as skittish. But we’ve still got
some growing up to do,” said Coach Brunel. His team is swinging at too many
bad pitches, which translates into too many strikeouts. “But more games will
take care of that,” he said.
This weekend, the Lady Tigers travel to Aiken, S.C., for the annual Aiken
tournament. Friday, Feb. 27, they play their first home game, an important
region contest against Middle Georgia. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
